LANDSCAPE WITH SOLDIERS AT A LAKE.

Lot 621: LANDSCAPE WITH SOLDIERS AT A LAKE.

Auction Date: Mar 26, 2021

Estimate: €1,000 - €1,500

Description: Drawing, pen and brown ink, 19 x 27 cm, laid paper, unsigned (some black spots, trimmed to the image, min. stains). - Nice landscape drawing which compares well with others in the same style and technique of the Bolognese painter and draughtsman Giovanni Grimaldi (1606-1680). As accomplished fresco painter, Grimaldi painted a variety of subjects, but his decorative landscapes were most popular with leading Roman families. Organised around a clear sequence of planes leading into the distance punctuated by people and buildings, Grimaldi's landscape drawings remained based in the Carracci tradition. His many etchings and drawings spread the influence of the Bolognese landscape throughout Europe. Formerly attributed to Guercino. - Prov. Robert Udny (1722-1802), British merchant and art collector (stamp on passe-partout, Lugt 2248)....

GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (attr. a)

Lot 982: GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (attr. a)

Auction Date: Sep 24, 2020

Estimate: €400 - €700

Description: (Bologna, 1605/1606 - 1680)

GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (Bologna 1606-1680 Rome) A Landscape with a Tower.

Lot 41: GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI (Bologna 1606-1680 Rome) A Landscape with a Tower.

Auction Date: Nov 05, 2019

Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500

Description: GIOVANNI FRANCESCO GRIMALDI
(Bologna 1606-1680 Rome)
A Landscape with a Tower.

Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper mounted on card stock. 180x250 mm; 7 1/8x10 inches.

Sold Christie's, New York, January 11, 1994, lot 206A.

There are similar drawings by Grimaldi published in Kurz, Bolognese Drawings of the XVII & XVIII Centuries in the Collection of Her Majesty the Queen at Windsor Castle, London, 1988, plates 44, 48, 49 and 50.

Grimaldi was a well-traveled and multi-faceted Italian painter, draughtsman, printmaker and architect. He trained in the circle of the Carracci family in Bologna and later made his way to Rome, where he was appointed architect to Pope Paul V (1605-21) and was also patronized by succeeding popes. Towards 1648 he was invited to France by Cardinal Mazarin (1602-1661), and for about two years was employed in building for that minister and for Louis XIV, and in fresco painting in the Louvre. Grimaldi returned to Rome around 1650 where he remained for the rest of his career. He was appointed director of the Accademia di San Luca in Rome and during his later career executed engravings and etchings from his own landscape designs and from those of Titian and the Carracci. The current drawing is likely a study for one of these later landscape etchings by Grimaldi.

Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi etching

Lot 8: Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi etching

Auction Date: Oct 21, 2017

Estimate: $200 - $400

Description: Giovanni Francesco Grimaldi (Italian 1606-1680)- ''Landscape with a Sunken Road'' (Bartsch 35 i/ii), before De Rossi's address)- etching with thread margins on three sides, watermark: three mound s with a lily. This image of travelers in a rocky landscape with one man pausing to contemplate an ancient tomb, has evaded definitive attribution. John T. Spike retains Bartsch's tentative attribution to Grimaldi, with the caveat 'that it is an early work, if in fact by Grimaldi'. ''The Illustrated Bartsch vol. 42, p. 42. An attribution to Castiglione was suggested by Disertori in 1922 and seconded by Delogu in 1928. On stylistic grounds, Alfredo Petrucci attributed it to Crescenzio Onofir (1632?-1712), a student of Gaspard Dughet....

Grimaldi-Paesaggio, XVIIth century

Lot 121: Grimaldi-Paesaggio, XVIIth century

Auction Date: Jul 21, 2017

Estimate: €400 - €600

Description: GRIMALDI Giovanni Francesco (1605 - 1680) - PAESAGGIO

[English description] BOLOGNA, XVIIth century – In-4° (195x195 mm) - Etching, on the left lower side author’s name. Animated landscape inside a typographic round. Good condition.

[Italian description] Incisione originale eseguita all' acquaforte su matrice di rame, in basso a sinistra indicazione dell' autore. Raffinato paesaggio animato inscritto entro tondo tipografico. Esemplare in buone condizioni conservative.
