Among Desert Sand Dunes, an oil on canvas by Paul Grimm (American, 18911974), signed lower left. The canvas measures 24" x 30", and the complete piece measures 30" x 36" housed in a gilded frame with a light-colored inner liner. Verso bears an artist inscription in black marker reading, "Among Desert Sand Dunes" alongside a presentation inscription reading, "To Harold & Virginia With Best Wishes, Paul Grimm" and a separate signature and date reading "Paul Grimm - 70-".Depicting a vast desert floor in bloom with scattered desert flora, smoke trees, and sandy washes in the foreground, leading toward a flat valley floor in the midground. The composition is backed by a massive, sunlit mountain range with light snow dustings on the upper peaks under a blue sky filled with large, rolling cloud formations catching yellow sunlight. Grimm, a highly celebrated Palm Springs artist and a foundational figure in early California desert painting, was nationally renowned for his masterful depictions of the Coachella Valley, Mt. 12" by 16" unframed. 24" by 28" framed. Oil on Board. Paul A Grimm (1891 King Williamstown, South Africa - 1974 Palm Springs, California). Known for: Desert landscape, some harbors and portrait painting. Born in South America, Paul Grimm was a desert and mountain landscape painter whose Palm Springs, California gallery attracted many prominent persons who became collectors of his work. He came to the United States at the age of seven. When he was eighteen, he won a scholarship in Rochester New York to study at the Dusseldorf Royal Academy in Germany. In 1919, he moved to Hollywood, California where he painted backdrops for movie studios, and in 1932, he settled in Palm Springs and maintained a small studio gallery there. A good friend who often stopped by was President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Grimm spent much of his summer time painting in the High Sierras, but he is known for his scenes of the changing moods of the Southern California desert. He also painted missions and Indian portraits.
