(Rücken stärker berieben, etwas fleckig und mit Läsuren, Rücken des 1. und 2. Bandes gebrochen, bestoßen) mit montiertem, goldgeprägtem RSchild. London. S. Hooper, 1773-1776. -- Lowndes II, 948. Graesse III, 161. Brunet 2679. UCBA I, 735. Vgl. Cox III, 422. Lipperheide Gca 10 (spätere Ausgabe). – Seltene erste Ausgabe. Die Kupfer zeigen englische und walisische Schlösser, Landhäuser, Kathedralen sowie architektonische Grundpläne und Bauweisen. "These volumes gain immensely from the very fine views of cathedrals, churches, abbeys, castles and ancient remains" (Cox). Bis 1787 sollten dann noch weitere zwei, hier nicht vorhandene Supplement-Bände erscheinen. Die Anzahl der Tafeln ist bei den uns nachweislichen Exemplaren oftmals sehr unterschiedlich, von 10 bis 48, hier sind 37 enthalten. – Die Kupfertitel der Bände jeweils mit etwas größerem Randabriss (ohne Darstellungsverlust). Alle Bände mit stärkeren Braun- und Feuchtflecken durch Tafeln und Textblock. Vereinzelt wurmstichig, etwas braunfleckig und im Rand gebräunt, allenthalben stärkere Gebrauchsspuren, unfrisch. Unbeschnittene Exemplare. Die Textkupfer im ersten Band sind sehr stimmungsvoll und zart koloriert, in den Folgebänden dann nicht mehr.

Rowlandson. Curieux ouvrage par le Britannique Fr. Grose (1731-191), antiquaire, dessinateur et lexicographe (notamment du "slang" [argot]), qui mena également une carrière militaire.         Francis Grose (1731-1791) The Antiquities of Ireland (2 Volumes), London 1791, 4to, old polished calf, the spine in compartments with crimson and green gilt lettered morocco labels, and dated, with the rare colour-printed plates. Provenance: Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness 1st Baronet (1798 - 1868) of St. Annes , Clontarf and Ashford Castle and thence by descent to the current owners . Sir Benjamin Guinness was noted for his philanthropic works most notably the restoration of St. Patricks cathedral where there is a statue in memorial to him in the gardens and Marsh's Library. He built an Italianate house St. Annes in Clontarf which Mark Bence Jones considered to be the most palatial house to be built in Ireland during the second half of the 19th century and also transformed Ashford Castle in Cong from a small Georgian shooting box into a French Chateau .
