L'opera in oggetto può essere identificata con il dipinto elencato dal titolo Savonarola dans sa prison al n. 12 di pagina 8 del catalogo Esposizione d'Arte nel Palazzo Corsini in Firenze, Firenze, Tipografia Victoria, 1904 nel quale erano riportate 20 opere di Henry De Groux collocate nella Sala D. Il soggiorno di De Groux a Firenze, dove si recò in viaggio e fu raggiunto poco dopo dall'amante Germaine Lievens, giovane cugina della moglie con la quale aveva una relazione extra coniugale, ebbe inizio il 28 aprile 1903. La presenza in città dell'artista belga, già molto noto a Parigi dove la rivista "La Plume" gli aveva dedicato un fascicolo monografico e le sue opere erano state esposte presso la Galerie George Petit, destò attenzione nell'élite intellettuale cittadina nella quale fu introdotto da Domenico Trentacoste, in particolare nell'ambiente artistico e letterario delle riviste d'avanguardia "Leonardo" e "Hermes" che lo accolsero tra i collaboratori. Trovò sistemazione in un atelier in Piazza Donatello dove si fermò stabilmente a eseguire una serie di opere ispirate alla figura di Savonarola. A seguito dell'apprezzamento dei suoi lavori che aveva intenzione di presentare alla biennale di Venezia, fu invitato ad esporre alla mostra dei secessionisti a Palazzo Corsini inaugurata il 28 marzo 1904, nella quale gli fu dedicata un'intera sala di quadri di tema dantesco, savonaroliano, storico e simbolista eseguiti a Firenze. In concomitanza dell'evento che lo stava celebrando a Firenze, l'artista cadde in preda di un grave stato di agitazione mentale in seguito alla gelosia per Germaine che sospettava di tradimento con Mario Schiff, il segretario della Società Leonardo. Il suo stato confusionale e violento ebbe per conseguenza l'internamento forzato nell'ospedale psichiatrico di San Salvi, mentre a seguito dello scandalo le sue opere in mostra vennero immediatamente sequestrate dalla mostra. Dopo poche settimane di ricovero, l'artista riuscì abilmente a fuggire durante il permesso di una passeggiata che gli era stato concesso grazie all'intercessione dell'amico Giovanni Papini. Attraversò a piedi quasi tutta la Toscana e da Chiavari con vari mezzi di fortuna raggiunse Marsiglia. Le opere sotto sequestro furono poi restituite e spedite a Bruxelles mentre il dipinto César à la tête de ses lègions approdò alla Galleria d'Arte Moderna di Palazzo Pitti dove si trova tutt'ora. Signed lower right: HENRY DE GROUX Henry de Groux was one of the most prominent representatives of Belgian art between Symolism and Art Nouveau. His monumental pastels are among his best works. Lempertz successfully sold three such pieces from the Bernard de Leye Collection in 2021. This pastel follows on from these in terms of both content and technique. It bears witness to Groux's passion for the works of Richard Wagner, whose operas were regularly performed in Brussels at the time. The "Ride of the Valkyries" is closely related to the painting of the same subject from the de Leye Collection (Lempertz, 15th July 2021, lot 255). It is comparable in the intensity, dynamism and density of the pastel strokes, as well as its masterful technique. The figural composition here, however, is on a smaller scale and reminiscent of the works of James Ensor.

In 1898, one magazine wrote of this poster: “This composition, which recalls creations by Rembrandt and Gustave Doré, is much more a print than a poster. However, it retains the interest that attaches to the art of Henry de Groux, all of whose works have a character of seriousness and high consciousness” (Mercure de France, Volume 25, p. 321). Il segno grafico dell'artista belga, per quanto partecipe del clima simbolista, è sempre carico di drammatica espressività che lo distingue in modo dirompente, soprattutto in rapporto alle forme più edulcorate di quel contesto. In Italia, la sua opera trovò sostegno nel critico e collezionista Vittorio Pica, che gli dedicò alcune pagine in "Attraverso gli albi e le cartelle", ponendolo assieme a Redon, Rops e Goya nell'articolo dal significativo titolo Artisti macabri. Così infatti ne descriveva l'opera: «la sua era una pittura bizzarra, violenta e direi quasi selvaggia, che, al primo guardarla, produceva un'impressione punto gradevole. Ma pure, fermati che avevate gli occhi su quei quadri [...] non vi riusciva più di staccarneli, presi da quel misterioso fascino che posseggono le vere opere d'arte» (p. 4). (1)

This frenetic composition, full of an almost mystical violence, was thus described by the painter's son-in-law, Baumann: ""the girls of the Rhine, their arms outstretched, desperate, that emerge from the whirlpools, these beautiful green waves that de Groux modeled like the flesh of a woman, but powerless to save the defeated hero, overthrown [...] while Wotan hits him in the side with the spear of death "". In the crowded and tense composition of the scene, full of almost infernal figures, De Groux here seems to re-propose the suffocating excitement of his masterpiece painted ten years before, ""Christ attacked"", which seems to have served as a model for a third key painting in the production of the Belgian artist, linked to the contemporary scandal of the ""Affaire Dreyfus"", the ""Zola attacked"", of 1898, only one year before ""The death of Siegfried"". In June 1899 two oil paintings with the same Wagnerian subject are attested, one in the collection of M. Férard and the second belonging to L. Henry de Groux, The Temptation of Saint Anthony

Signed lower right: Henry de Groux Framed under glass. The Temptation of Saint Anthony, or “La Tentation de Saint Antoine“ was the title of a novel by Gustave Flaubert published in 1874, on which the author had worked for 25 years. Flaubert considered the piece his most important work, but it was met with disapproval and lack of understanding by many contemporaries. They criticised the equal status which Flaubert assigned to the different religions, but also the unusual style of his prose. A few years later however, the sequence of ecstatic images and symbols described in the book made it a seminal prototype for the dream literature and an important work for the development of Symbolism. It therefore comes not as a surprise that Henry de Groux, an admirer both of Richard Wagner and Gustave Flaubert, adopted the motif of the temptation – not in the traditional Christian meaning, but as a metaphor for the challenges every human being encounters, including erotic temptations, so masterly described by Flaubert in his novel.

Henry de Groux, Senta - from Richard Wagner´s "Flying Dutchman"

Als opulent ausgeführtes Pastell ist diese „Zeichnung" von Henry de Groux sowohl formal als auch inhaltlich ein exemplarisches Werk des Belgischen Symbolismus. Die Künstler dieser Epoche legten Wert auf eine raffinierte, aufwendig durchgearbeitete Technik und einer komplexen Komposition - vielleicht sogar im bewussten Gegensatz zu der raschen Plain-Air-Malerei der Impressionisten. Zugleich aber ist dieses Werk inhaltlich und durch die Botschaft, die es transportiert, eine Inkunabel des Symbolismus. Nicht nur für de Groux, aber speziell für ihn, waren Richard Wagners Bühnendramen und das Pathos seiner mystischen Figuren mit ihren dunklen Träumen von Tod und Erlösung, eine wichtige Inspirationsfigur. Diese monumentale und detailreiche Zeichnung geht auf Wagner Oper „Der Fliegende Holländer zurück". Die weibliche Gestalt des Bildes ist Senta, deren selbst erlegte Bestimmung es war, den verdammten Holländer zu erlösen. Nur alle 7 Jahre war diesem ein kurzer Aufenthalt an Land vergönnt. Fände er dort eine Frau, die ihm treu bliebe, so wären er und seine Mannschaft von ihrem Bann erlöst. Bei der ersten Begegnung träumt und fühlt sich Senta berufen, den Verdammten zu erlösen, aber die Geschichte endet nicht gut. Der Holländer zweifelt an Sentas Treue und steigt auf sein Schiff. Senta ruft laut nach „Treu bis zum Tod" und stürzt sich ins Meer. Augenblicklich versinkt das Schiff des Holländers und ist erlöst. In einer späteren Korrektur des Schlusses sieht man zur Musik mit dem „Erlösungsmotiv" den Holländer und Senta aus dem Meer zum Himmel aufsteigen.
