                    This 1961 Relax poster by artist Rene Gruau which reads Compagnie Maritime des Chargeurs Reunis (Company of United Shippers) is an image which presents a relaxing maritime scene. The poster, an advertisement for a cruise ship company features a woman illustrated in a typical Gruau stylization lounging on a vibrant red beach chair. She is set amongst an aqua-colored sky and serene oceanic background. The concise style of Gruau and attractiveness of the image makes the viewer wish that they were sitting on board along with the female. Chargeurs Reunis was founded in 1872 as a shipping company, initially operating between Le Havre and the River Plate. In 1883 it took over the Societe Postale de l'Atlantique and started a service to West Africa. In 1894 it took over Compagnie Commerciale des Transports a Vapeur Francais, giving it that company's services to New Orleans and the Gulf of Mexico. After the Second World War, the company, headed by Francis Cyprien Fabre, reduced its fleet to some 15 ships. Between 1964 and 1976, the company took over several French ship owners, including Fabre, Fraissinet, Societe Generale des Transport Maritimes, Paquet. In 1979, Chargeurs Reunis was involved in several branches of international transport, including maritime bulk and container shipping and the transport of passengers (Wikipedia). Dimensions : à vue 48,5 x 38,5 cm Né Renato Zavagli-Ricciardelle delle Caminate à Rimini en Italie, René Gruau est célèbre dans le monde entier pour ses illustrations de mode qui resteront dans la légende, le grand couturier Christian Lacroix dit de lui « une robe réussie est celle qui a la netteté et l’aplomb d’un tableau de Gruau » Il s´installe à Paris dès 1924 et commence sa carrière de dessinateur de mode. Ses premiers dessins sont publiés en Italie, en Allemagne et en Angleterre. De 1935 à 1939 il collabore avec les magazines Femina, Marie-Claire, L’officiel ou encore l’Album du Figaro. 1946 marque sa première collaboration avec International Textiles pour lequel il dessinera toutes les couvertures jusqu’en 1984. Mais 1947 marque le tournant de sa carrière : son ami Christian Dior qu’il avait rencontré en 1930 lui commande le dessin publicitaire du Parfum MISS DIOR, ainsi que la fameuse Robe Bar, le New-Look est né. C’est le début d’une collaboration de plus de 40 ans qui le verra illustrer les plus grands parfums et campagnes de mode de la marque. René Gruau a, selon John Galliano, « capturé le style et l'esprit Dior, tout en mouvements et à l'aide de ses trois couleurs fétiches : le rouge, le noir et le blanc » Jusqu’à la fin de sa vie, il travaillera pour les plus grands noms de la couture et de la mode, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, Balmain, Givenchy, Rochas, Elle, etc.
