Gruppe, is well-regarded for blending expressive coloration and painterly brushstrokes with traditional New England / Northeastern themes and subjects. In this painting, we see a copse of birch trees with bright red foliage. The land and water around these trees is made up of grey-blues and purples, with hints of other colors throughout. Gulls can be seen circling about. Signed by Gruppe in lower right corner. The painting is matted and framed, and the frame is shrink wrapped. Painting is in excellent new, as-bought condition. 28 1/4" wide by 21" tall (opening in matte), 36 1/4" wide by 29 1/4" tall by 7/8" deep. Gruppe studied at Yale University and at Columbia, as well as at the National University of Mexico. He earned a Masters of Fine Art from Columbia University while on a fellowship there. After school he traveled around Europe, where he traveled through France, Germany, and Holland. Gruppe spent over twenty years in Holland, becoming a celebrity artist and ultimately being patronized by the royalty of Europe. Gruppe returned to America, becoming both a painter and dealer/broker in the art of Dutch painters, and popularizing Dutch art among American collectors and art connoisseurs.
