Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino,  Italian 1591-1666-  Profile portrait of a bearded man;  pen and brown ink on laid paper, bears faint inscription 'Guercino' (lower edge), 13.2 x 8.5 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Bonhams, Knightsbridge, 9 July 2003, lot 1 (£5,287.50);  where purchased by the present owner (A Distinguished British Private Collection).  Note:  The present work exhibits Guercino's distinctive technique as a draughtsman, particularly in the clearly delineated hatching which defines his works on paper. This approach is also evident, for example, in his 'Judith with the head of Holofernes' which sold at Christie's, London, on 6 July 2021, lot 7 (£356,250), and his 'Mars brandishing a sword' which sold at Christie's, New York, on 28 January 2022, lot 6 ($275,000).

HEILIGER DOMINIKUS Öl auf Leinwand. Doubliert. 79,6 x 58 cm. In Holzrahmen. Beigegeben Expertise von Nicholas Turner, Halstead, 28. September 2018, in Kopie.

We are grateful to Massimo Pulini for endorsing the attribution of the present painting on the basis of photographs and for his help in cataloguing this lot. The subject of this work is the Old Testament episode of Amnon and Tamar (2 Samuel 13) which is handled with notable sensitivity. The artist not only renders the narrative with clarity but also presents its complex psychological dimension. The re-emergence of this work constitutes a significant addition to the oeuvre of Guercino and can be dated to the artist’s full maturity. Guercino’s account book records that he executed two versions of the subject of Amnon and Tamar between January and March 1650 (see the Libro dei Conti (Bologna, Biblioteca dell’Archiginnasio, Ms. B331). This account book, initiated some twenty years earlier by the artist’s brother, Paolo Antonio Barbieri, was continued by Guercino himself after his brother’s death in 1649 and provides a valuable record of his artistic production. The account book records that the first Amnon and Tamar by Guercino was paid for by Girolamo Bavoso on 28 January 1650, for 143 scudi and 3 Lire di Cento, the note specifying that it consisted of ‘two half-length figures’. The second version of the subject is recorded as having been commissioned and settled on 26 March 1650 for 150 scudi by Aurelio Zanoletti – ‘e questo fu Amnone quando scacio tamar sua sorela è questa istoria, fu cavata dalla Sacra Scritura’ (see B. Ghelfi [ed.], Il Libro dei Conti del Guercino, 1629–1666, Venice 1997, pp. 145–146). In his Felsina Pittrice, Carlo Cesare Malvasia, informs us that the first of the two paintings had initially been commissioned by Aurelio Zanoletti, but that he agreed to cede it to a Signor Girolamo Bavoso and then subsequently commissioned Guercino to paint the subject again (see C. C. Malvasia, Felsina Pittrice, 1678, vol. II, p. 376). The close chronological proximity of the execution of the two paintings and the circumstance under which they were commissioned, has previously led art historians to believe that the two compositions were almost identical. However, the recent re-emergence of the present fully autograph work, which is stylistically also from the same period, necessitates a fresh assessment of the artist’s production. The second of the two versions of Amnon and Tamar which Zanoletti paid for in March 1650 is considered to be the version, today conserved in the National Gallery of Art in Washington (inv. no. 1986.17.1). In his monographic study of Guercino, Nicholas Turner proposed that the Amnon and Tamar purchased by Girolamo Bavoso in January 1650 is identifiable as the painting sold at Christies on 18th December 1980, lot 14, now in a private collection (see N. Turner, The Paintings of Guercino, Rome 2017, p. 657, no. 367.I). However, Massimo Pulini argues that the Christie’s version is not the autograph, first, version of the composition recorded in Guercino’s account book, but rather that it was probably created in Guercino’s workshop by his collaborator, Bartolomeo Gennari, in order to preserve a record of the artist’s compositional inventions. Pulini believes that the present painting of Amnon and Tamar can be identified as the first version executed by Guercino in January 1650 which was purchased by Girolamo Bavoso. He also suggests that a drawing conserved in the National Gallery in Washington (inv. 1989.14.1), in which the placement of the figures is essentially the same (albeit with an alteration in the torsion of Amnon’s body), is a study for the present work.

Partially minor old restoration, partially minor old retouching. Frame. The composition directly follows the upper section of the monumental altarpiece ''Seppellimento di Santa Petronilla,'' which Guercino created in 1623 for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome (now in the Capitoline Museums). There, the heavenly vision is arranged above the burial scene; the present work isolates this upper part of the picture and transforms it into an independent devotional image. Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, called Il Guercino,  Italian 1591-1666-  Ecce Homo;  pen, brown ink, and wash on paper, bears inscription 'guerchino' (lower left), bears traces of a collector's stamp (lower right), 9.5 x 13.6 cm.  Provenance:  Anon. sale, Christie's, New York, 4-5 April 2007, lot 7 (part lot, as 'Manner of Guercino').  Private Collection, UK.  Note:  This drawing is likely one of a number of preparatory studies made by Guercino for his painting 'Christ Crowned with Thorns', also known as 'Ecce Homo', commissioned by Marchese Tanari, and in the collection of the Alte Pinakothek in Munich [229].  Indeed, the drawing appears to foremostly relate to 'an important 'Ecce Homo' image designed by Guercino in 1629/30 that was clearly a important reference point for the Tanari commission drawings completed some seventeen years later. The work in question is an illustrated title page, dedicated to Cardinal Antonio Barberini, conceived by Guercino (the original drawing is lost) and engraved by Jerome David for a volume written by the painter's great discoverer, mentor, and patron Padre Antonio Mirandola (1573-1648)' [see British Museum U,4.96] (Suzanne Folds McCullagh, ed., 'Strokes of Genius: Italian Drawings from the Goldman Collection', Yale University Press, 2014, p.150).  The present work has been identified by Professor Stone, in discussion with Louise Rice, as a 'drawing in reverse of the printed composition [mentioned above] (pen and brown ink) - and thus possibly reflecting a lost preparatory sheet by Guercino for David's title page'. (Suzanne Folds McCullagh, ed., 'Strokes of Genius: Italian Drawings from the Goldman Collection', Yale University Press, 2014, p.186).
