Artist: VINCENT GUERRA Size: 24 1/4 x 39 3/8 in./61.6 x 99.4 cm Alepee et Cie, Paris Once World War II was over, Air France could capitalize on the African routes it had acquired in its merger with Air Afrique in 1940. Guerra plays up the exotic destination with a handsome wood-grain design. This is the rare English-language version of the poster, one that utilizes a smaller-eared Asian elephant, as opposed to the African elephant Guerra's used in a later version of the poster (see PAI-XXVII, 80). Though a superb work of art, "this does not necessarily mean that the poster artist knew African fauna in detail. Guetta made a beautiful poster in ochre tones in 1946 . . . illustrating three elephants on a background of coconut trees with a plane overhead . . . Unfortunately, he had used photographs of Asian elephants for his documentation"; their ears are shorter than African elephants. Condition A- / B+: creases in margins; creases and restoration along horizontal fold. This poster was originally issued in 1946. Although drawn by the artist from photographs, "unfortunately he had used photographs of Asian elephants . . . and their morphology is distinctly different from that of African elephants, and notably the ears, which are shorter" (Air France p. 130). In 1948, the artist corrected the image and the poster was reissued, "giving the African pachyderms earlobes worthy of their breed" (ibid). Just after the end of the war, France had to provide airline service to its colonies. A new type of poster appeared, promoting tourist attractions. The airline drew on mythology and highlighted the clash of cultures: pagodas and riverboats, in contrast to the modernity and mechanics of the airplane. A recurring design incorporated the airplane, underscoring the opposition between travel geared for the future and the immutability of these countries. The Africa that Air France flew over was an eternal land of folklore. The posters were parables echoing the relationship of now-dated colonial thought: modernity versus secular tradition.
