This piece encapsulates many of the artistic concerns that had accompanied Guerrero throughout his career, such as the prominence of color, the gestural energy of the brushstroke, and the construction of a pictorial space conceived as a field of emotional and perceptual tensions. Initially trained in Granada and Madrid, Guerrero moved to the United States in 1950, where he became part of the New York art scene at a decisive moment in the development of Abstract Expressionism. His relationship with artists such as Rothko, Kline, and Motherwell allowed him to assimilate some of the fundamental principles of that movement, although he always maintained a voice of his own, marked by Spanish cultural memory and a particular sensitivity toward color as a vehicle for inner experience. The apparent formal simplicity of the work actually reflects a complex compositional strategy characteristic of Guerrero’s late work. During the 1970s and 1980s, the artist progressively reduced figurative or allusive elements to focus on essential relationships between color, gesture, and space. During these years, coinciding with his renewed connection to Spain and his frequent stays in his native country, his palette took on an increasingly intense luminosity, evocative of Mediterranean light and the landscapes and memories associated with his Andalusian roots. The vibrant yellows, fiery reds, and chromatic hallmarks that define this composition can be interpreted in this context as a reaffirmation of that visual and emotional identity. The chromatic intensity thus refers to a Mediterranean sensibility that he never abandoned, while the open structure and freedom of gesture reveal the influence of the New York School. In this way, the work occupies a space where tradition and modernity converge—between the international experience of Abstract Expressionism and the enduring legacy of Spanish cultural memory. José Guerrero was one of the leading Spanish representatives of Abstract Expressionism and a prominent member of the New York School. Trained in Granada, Madrid, and Paris, he settled in New York in 1950. He returned to Spain in 1965 and helped found the Museum of Abstract Art in Cuenca. He soon returned to New York, though he continued to travel to Spain. In 1984, he received the Gold Medal for Fine Arts, and in 1989, he was honored by the Rodríguez Acosta Foundation.

In this work, José Guerrero deploys with full maturity one of the most personal and recognizable languages of the Spanish abstraction of the 20th century. The composition is articulated from large chromatic fields of vibrant reds and magentas, crossed by an oblique axis in light tones that introduces tension and rhythm in the pictorial plane. The brushstroke is broad and presents transparencies that allow the different layers of work to be appreciated, reinforcing the sensation of depth and spatial density. This work is an example of how Guerrero conceived painting as both a physical and emotional space. His long stay in New York since 1950 and his direct contact with American abstract expressionism, especially with artists such as Rothko or Motherwell, were decisive in the configuration of a deeply lyrical work, where the gesture, contained but intense, is articulated in compositional structures that do not renounce the evocation of interior landscapes and Mediterranean memories. In this sense, his progressive return to Spain at the end of the seventies, in the context of the democratic transition, meant a re-reading of his work from his cultural sphere of origin, without this implying the abandonment of his international projection and recognition. Jose Guerreo trained in Granada and Madrid, at the San Fernando School of Fine Arts, where he was a student of Daniel Vázquez Díaz. With a scholarship from the Casa de Velázquez and later from the French government, he moved to Paris in 1945, where he came into contact with the European avant-garde and the Spanish artists of the School of Paris. In 1950 he settled in New York, a decisive city for his artistic evolution, where he progressively abandoned figuration and developed an abstract language marked by the influence of Rothko, Kline, Still and Newman. His international projection was consolidated in 1954 with his exhibition with Joan Miró at the Art Club of Chicago, being represented by the influential gallery owner Betty Parsons. Although he returned temporarily to Spain in 1965 and participated in the creation of the Museo de Arte Abstracto de Cuenca, he maintained his activity mainly between New York and Spain. Today he is recognized as one of the most prominent Spanish figures of the New York School, with work present in major international museums such as the Guggenheim, MoMA or the Reina Sofia, and with numerous institutional awards throughout his career. In this silkscreen José Guerrero evokes with the gestural force of the stroke and the contrast of chromatic intensities a whole world of emotions. It is a fully informalist work, constructed with a language that values the randomness of the material and the brushstroke, the intense and emotional stroke, the expressiveness of emptiness and the unforeseen. Painter and engraver, José Guerrero developed his work within abstract expressionism. He trained in Granada, Madrid and Paris. Upon his arrival in New York in 1950, he discovered abstract expressionism, which would be a decisive influence on his work from that moment on. In 1954 he exhibited with Joan Miró at the Art Club of Chicago, an exhibition that meant his definitive international projection. In 1959 he was named Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government, and in 1976 his first anthological exhibition was held in his hometown. In 1984 he received the Gold Medal of Fine Arts, and in 1989 he was decorated by the Rodriguez Acosta Foundation. He is represented in the art center that bears his name in Granada, the Guggenheim Museum, the MoMA and the Metropolitan in New York, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the British Museum and the Patio Herreriano in Valladolid, among others.

He began his training at the School of Arts and Crafts in Granada, and soon moved to Madrid to continue his studies at the Escuela Superior de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, where he was a student of Daniel Vázquez Díaz. In 1942 he obtained a scholarship from the Casa de Velázquez, and in 1945 he moved to Paris thanks to a new scholarship, this time granted by the French government. In the French capital he got to know the European avant-garde first hand, and came into contact with the Spanish painters of the School of Paris. Since then, his work is full of avant-garde echoes and Picasso's signs, clearly visible in this work, features that he will abandon in the fifties, when he discovers abstract expressionism in New York. He arrived in New York in 1950, encouraged by his wife, the New York journalist Roxana Pollock, whom he had married a year earlier. In 1954 he exhibited with Joan Miró at the Art Club of Chicago, an exhibition that meant his definitive international projection. His dealer was Betty Parson, one of the most important gallery owners in New York at the time. Guerrero's style then changed completely, showing a profound influence of Rothko and Kline; he definitively abandoned figuration and built compositions where a marked tension between spaces, colors and unrecognizable objects was evident.
