After debuting at the Paris Salon in 1870, Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin became well-known for his taste for 'Orientalist' figures, Accommodating the taste of the wealthier and better travelled buyers, he specialised in producing models of figures from 'exotic' far-flung regions: courtesans from Japan, women and men from Turkey and Algiers, hunters and falconers from the Middle East and women from India and Persia.This figure of Femme Indienne was first modelled in 1872 and, after acquiring the rights to produce this model and two other pairs of sculptures, Barbedienne offered this sculpture in their 1886 catalogue as Deux Femmes, Indienne et Persane depicting both an Indian and a Persian female lifting torcheres in their upraised arms. They were offered in a choice of sizes: 200cm, 120cm, 95cm and 78cm high. An example of the largest version of the pair were installed to flank the entrance to the Barbedienne estate and were sold in 1984 at the Hotel des Ventes for 530,000 francs.

ÉMILE GUILLEMIN (France, 1841-1907). Pair of Gallic soldiers, ca. 1875. Bronze with fine gold and silver patina. Signed. Measurements: 25 x 12 x 10 cm. Couple of flamboyant Gallic soldiers wearing traditional costumes and armed with helmet, shields, sword and axe. Both their serious countenance as well as the clothes of truthful character denote the rigorous study of the natural. Previously, Guillemin had already made other figures of fighters (such as the Roman gladiators acquired by the French State for the Castle of Saint-Germain-en-Laye). Guillemin also specialized in figurative works and was greatly inspired by the Middle East and its exoticism (Indian falconers, Turkish maidens and Japanese courtesans were among the most represented). A French sculptor of the Belle Époque, Émile Guillemin worked mainly in bronze, although he also produced works in other materials. He trained with his father, the painter Auguste Guillemin, and with Jean-Jules Samson. He showed his work at the Paris Salon between 1870 and 1899, being awarded an honorable mention in 1897.

Pair of silvered bronze sculptures depicting Renaissance arquebusiers. Both figures are signed 'Emile Guillemin' on the bases. Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841-1907) was a French sculptor who worked mainly with bronze and is associated with the Belle Epoque. Guillemin made his debut in the Paris Salon of 1870 where he exhibited a pair of Roman Gladiators, Retaire and Mirmillon. He showed work at the Salon of Paris from 1870 to 1899, and in 1897 received an honourable mention there. Please make all inquiries before bidding. All lots are sold "as-is", refer to our T&C. Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin (1841 – 1907) was a French sculptor active during the Belle Époque, known for his work in bronze. He trained under his father, the painter Auguste Guillemin, and also studied with Jean-Jules Salmson. Guillemin exhibited his work at the Salon of Paris from 1870 to 1899, receiving an honorable mention in 1897. 8.3/4 in. high, 5 in. wide for one sculpture, and 8.3/4 in. high, 5.3/4 in. wide for the other one.

Guillemin' and 'Barye Fils', dark brown patination, 80cm high overall Emile Coriolan Hippolyte Guillemin specialised in Oriental bronzes of this type, and is one of the most renowned sculptors of late 19th century Paris. He was inspired by the Middle East to produce various Romantic figures such as Ottoman maidens and Arab hunters, and regularly exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1870.
