    Henry Thomas Gulick Manalapan, New Jersey, 1872-1964 Middletown Railroad Bridge Oil on Board Signed l.r. verso. Henry Thomas Gulick was born August 1, 1872 in Manalapan, Monmouth County, NJ. His family was related to the Conover, Schenck, and Mount families which were all pre-Revolutionary families. His family moved to 111 New Monmouth Rd., Middletown in 1874 and in 1878 they moved to the 100 acre farm on Holland Road that was to be his home for the rest of his life except for the last 3 years where lived in a nursing care facility, The Ivy House, on Kings Highway in Middletown Village. He continued to paint despite having his leg amputated in 1963. He died on August 3, 1964, 2 days after his 92nd birthday. He went to school in the one-room Holland School and the teacher was David P. Van Brackle who also was an artist. He then went to Chattle High School in Long Branch. He worked the family farm for 55 years, concentrating on dairy, fruit, and vegetables. In 1901 he married Charlotte Emily Wikoff Field, a teacher for 9 years in Little Red Schoolhouse in Middletown. They had four children: 1) Isabelle, ( 1903-1985) 2) Henry Gregory 1907-1988) 3) Joseph (1909-1982) 4) Julia, (1912-2011) In 1946, he retired at the age of 74 due to arthritis and turned the farm over to his son, Joseph. His son, H. Gregory and his wife, Alice, gave him a set of paints for Christmas with a note saying, 'It wasn't a joke, they really expected him to use them". He had painted in high school and began to paint again. In the next 12 years he had nine one-man shows and 65 group shows. He painted for 19 years. He painted landscapes of Middletown and Holmdel and was called "The Grandpa Moses of Middletown". He also painted scenes in Bloomsbury, in Hunterdon County where he went to a summer camp. He also painted interior scenes of his farm house and his son, Gregory's house, which was next door. His work is represented in the Newark Museum, the Montclair Art Museum, the Monmouth County Historical Association, and the Monmouth County Park System. Provenance: Ralph W.
