He is considered one of the leading figures of Tyrolean Modernism, alongside artists such as Artur Nikodem, Ernst Nepo, Wilhelm Nicolaus Prachensky, and Hans Tyrol-Weber. Stylistically, Gurschner's work moves between Expressionism and New Objectivity, with both emotional expressiveness and clear formal structures playing a central role. As the nephew of the sculptors Emil and Gustav Gurschner, he was exposed to art at an early age. He attended the School of Applied Arts in Innsbruck and continued his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich between 1918 and 1920. Around 1920, Gurschner lived in Mühlau near Innsbruck and participated in the so-called "Mühlau Circle," an artists' group around Alfons Schnegg, Rudolf Lehnert, and Ernst Nepo. In the early 1920s, Gurschner created numerous landscapes and cityscapes, inspired by travels through Tyrol, Salzburg, and Italy. In 1924, he married the English aristocrat Dolores Cherwadsky-Damarkow, through whom he gained access to London's artistic and collector circles. In 1929, he exhibited for the first time at the prestigious Fine Art Society in London, establishing contacts with members of the aristocracy, diplomacy, and business. Further exhibitions in London and New York followed in later years. After his first marriage, he had a second, to Brenda Davidoff. Besides landscapes and portraits, he also created impressive nudes, distinguished by their synthesis of formal awareness and psychological depth. His work reveals a wide range of influences, from artists such as Giorgio de Chirico, Lovis Corinth, Franz Defregger, Helene Funke, Alfred Kubin, Franz Marc, Alfons Mucha, Sergius Pauser, and Paul Klee to Wassily Kandinsky.
