Nicolaos GYSIS (1842-1901) The vow (1875)

          Est: €200,000 - €250,000

signed right in the main subject: N. Gyzis / Munchen In 1875, Gyzis painted one of his most iconic works, The vow. It is a moral scene portraying the journey of a young girl until the remote chapel, supported by her mother, in order to fulfil her vow. The chain with the heart-shaped amulet that she is holding in her hands implies that the vow has to do with her lost fiance. The sorrow of the young woman is reflected in the dim colours of the sky and the barren dark setting, in which she walks barefoot. Her face, however, is shining, from a light which comes from an unknown source, which produces an exceptionally intense moment. She is undoubtedly the protagonist of the love drama. At this sad moment it seems that the only help she gets is from religion and her elderly mother who helps her reach the chapel. The painter produced three variations of the same subject (1874, 1875, 1886), a proof of his love for highly dramatic everyday moments and, in particular, for people who are heartbroken. With The vow, Gyzis breaks the limits of mere moral scenes and of the German chromatic palette and uses a highly personal idiom that encompasses the link between Greek emotion and Faith. The painting was completed after a short trip he took to Greece and in December 1875 it was acquired by the English art dealer Wallis before its purchase by a private collector in Athens.

Expertise: Dr. Konstantinos Didaskalou, 7.6.2016 (copy available). Provenance: European private collection. --------------- NIKOLAUS GYSIS (Sklavohory 1842–1901 München) Porträt eines Mädchens. Öl auf Leinwand. Unten rechts monogrammiert: NG. 26,5 × 22,5 cm. Gutachten: Dr. Konstantinos Didaskalou, 7.6.2016 (in Kopie vorhanden).

Soutzos Museum, Athens 2000 (illustrated).Y. Papaioannou, Nikolaos Gysis, Ta Nea editions, Athens 2006, p. 75 (discussed).Featured alone on the cover of Gysis' 1995 monograph and mounted prominently in the artist's 2001 major retrospective in Athens, this exquisite Bonhams picture is recognized by scholars as a masterpiece by the great exponent of 19th century Greek painting. In Melissa editions' The Greek Painters, the work is admired as "one of Gysis' finest children's portraits. Captured close up and in full frontal view, it shows only the girl's facial traits, while her head is wrapped in an enormous dark scarf."1 In a similar vein, Professor C. Christou noted that this head of a child is a Gysis masterpiece. Most of the girl's face is covered by a kerchief to lend more prominence to her eyes. Gysis manages to truly and masterfully convey on the painterly surface the child's very soul, her worries and innocence, the inner depth and honesty of character reflected in her beautiful green eyes.2 This close-up immediacy endows the picture with compelling energy, while the vigorous brushwork generates a sense of mobility and vitality that animates the sculpturesque calm of the sitter's posture. Reminiscent of Byzantine icons, the rigorously frontal image transforms the scarfed girl into a saint of an earthbound pantheon, while its captivating immediacy and resilient allure is a testament to Gysis' power of an imaginative transaction between the subject, the artist and the beholder.Synthesising Gysis' indebtedness to academic principles and his interest in venturing beyond clarity, likeness and descriptiveness to voice a strong artistic statement, this acute portrait shows no signs of idealisation, its unadorned beauty emanating from within, depending on honesty of representation, genuineness of character and purity of form. Impeccably painted in earth tones, highlighted by flashes of colour, solid outlines and lively brushstrokes, the work builds up a vibrant and moving image of remarkable expressive power. The generalised rendering and downplay of descriptive detail point to the artist's concern with purely pictorial issues, impelling the viewer to delve beyond the surface and seek the inner world of the young girl. 1. oil on canvas signed on the reverse 54 x 79 cm Provenance private collection, Athens Exhibited Athens, Iliou Melathron, Etaireia Filotechnon, Exhibition of Works by Nikolaos Gysis, March 15 – May 15, 1928, no 370 (listed in the exhibition catalogue) Literature N. Misirli, Gysis, Adam Editions, Athens, 1995, no. 122, p. 179, illustrated Note The work bears a stamp by the Etaireia Filotechnon, Exhibition of Works by Nikolaos Gysis, 1928, on the reverse. The work bears a signature by Antonis Benakis, the president of the Etaireia Filotechnon at the time, on the reverse. Nikolaos Gysis was born in the village of Sklavochori, on the island of Tinos in 1842. In 1850 his family moved to Athens. As a young boy Gysis showed an early inclination to drawing and at the tender age of eight attended art lessons at The School of Fine Arts, Athens. In 1854 at the age of twelve (when it was legal to start studying) he officially begun his studies and graduated ten years later. This formed the foundation of his artistic education. Later, in 1865, on a scholarship from the Panagia Evanghelistria of the Tinos Foundation, he moved to Munich to continue his studies at The Royal Academy of Fine Arts. He mostly lived in Munich for the rest of his life. Gysis, artistically, rapidly integrated into The Munch School, and became one of its most characteristic representatives in Greek art. This can be seen in the painting News of Victory of 1871, which deals with the Franco-Prussian War, and in the painting Apotheosis of Bavaria. At the beginning of the 1870s Gysis returned to Greece where he lived for a few years. During this time he produced a series of paintings with more avowedly Greek themes, such as Carnival in Athens and Engagement Ceremony. Together with Nikiforos Lytras, he travelled to Asia Minor in 1873 and then to Paris in 1876. From 1886 onwards he was a professor at The Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, in which time his work gradually evolved from detailed realistic depictions to singular impressionist compositions. Towards the end of his life, in the 1890s, he took a turn towards more religious themes. His work is housed in prominent museums and private collections in Greece, Germany and elsewhere. Nelly Misirli in her book Gysis, Adam Editions, Athens, 1995, comments on the work: 'Στην ' Οικογενειακή Σκηνή' η βαριά από τα προβλήματα αλλά ανθρώπινη στις σχέσεις ατμόσφαιρα δημιουργείται από το είδος του φωτός που παράγεται από δύο τεχνητές πηγές και τη συγκέντρωση του στα ολόφωτα σκεπάσματα του μωρού στην κούνια.’

Nikolaus Gysis (1842-1901) Nikolaus Gysis was born in Sklavochori, Tinos, and attended the National Technical University of Athens from 1854 to 1864, where he was trained by artists like Ludwig Thiersch (1825-1909). He moved to Munich in the following year, where he attended the Academy and became a student of Hermann Anschütz (1802-1880) and Alexander von Wagner (1838-1919). By 1868 he had reached a convincing artistic level, so that he was allowed to become a student of Karl von Piloty (1826-1886). He also found access to artist circles in Munich, where he associated with protagonists, including Wilhelm Leibel, Franz von Defregger, Eduard Kurzbauer and later also with Franz von Lenbach. From 1872 he spent two years in Greece, in order to then experience his most mature period, characterized by his annual contributions to the Great Exhibitions in the Glass Palace in Munich. In 1878 he was also asked to participants in the Paris World Exhibition. In 1880 he became an honorary member and in 1888 finally a professor of the Academy. His works included genre paintings and still lifes, as well as portraits and idealistic allegorical scenes that are regarded as pioneers of Jugendstil. Works by Nikolaus Gysis are today preserved, for instance, at the National Gallery in Athens. (cbo) Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.
