An enchanting landscape view captures an eternal moment, depicting variations of changing light effects in nature. Working in the tradition of Impressionism, U Lun Gywe created a peaceful composition by contrasting vertical trees and the diagonal shadow patterns formed on the earthy ground. This wonderfully orchestrated painting is executed in a subtle palette, allowing the structure of trees to stand out. Mar. 21, 2021

          U Lun Gywe (b. Myanmar, 1930) Shoulder Dance, 1994

          Est: RM32,000 - RM42,000

U Lun Gywe is one of the most accomplished and respected painters from Myanmar. His paintings of elegant dancers, rendered with a vibrant palette and flowing brushstrokes, are filled with movement in an impressionist style. Myanmar dance is deep-rooted in tradition and is integral to Burmese cultural identity. The dancer exudes her gracefulness on stage and conveys emotions through the delicacy of hand gestures and facial expression. U Lun Gywe, now an ailing 91, is without doubt the most revered and accomplished artist in Myanmar today. He fuses Western Impressionist fervour with Myanmar spirituality and Buddhist concepts. He was initially trained at home by the greats such as U Ngwe Gaing, U Thet Win, U Chit Maung and U Thein Han. In 1964, he studied Chinese brush techniques and oil painting at the Beijing Central Academy Of Fine Arts, and in 1971, he spent a year in East Germany studying European art and art restoration under Prof Indo Tim.

        • ‘LADY PLAYING THE SAUNG’ BY U LUN GYWE
          Mar. 06, 2021

‘LADY PLAYING THE SAUNG’ BY U LUN GYWE

          Est: €1,500 - €3,000

‘LADY PLAYING THE SAUNG’ BY U LUN GYWE (BORN 1930) Oil on canvas. An early work by perhaps the greatest living Burmese painter. Finely painted with a young lady richly adorned in beaded jewelry and wearing fine colorful garments, kneeling on the ground, and playing the saung (Burmese harp) with a cheerful yet focused expression. Framed. Provenance: Collection of Ludvík Doležal, acquired in Burma during his stay there as an attaché between 1970 and 1973, and thence by descent in the same family. Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. Dimensions: Size incl. frame ca. 62 x 53 cm, Image size 46.5 x 38.5 cm Lun Gywe (born 1930) is a Burmese painter who works in oil and watercolor. Outside of Myanmar his work has been exhibited, often in solo shows, in Japan, Korea, China, Australia, the USA and Singapore. He studied under Thet Win and graduated from the Art Institute of Teacher's Training in 1954. He was an instructor at the School of Fine Arts, Yangon, between 1958 and 1979, and principal of the same school from 1977 to 1979. He began painting in a realistic vein, influenced by the major painters of the Rangoon School, Ba Nyan and Thein Han, who was his painting master. Over time, his work became more expressive and today some of it might even be seen as expressionist. Auction result comparison: Compare with a later work by the same artist, depicting a dancing lady, dated 1999, at Sotheby’s Hong Kong in Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Art on 6 October 2019, lot 316, sold for HKD 85,000. "A noted collector of the work of U LUN GYWE has advised us that the present painting could also be from the hand of U CHIT SWE, who is about 10 years younger than U LUN GYWE. It is therefore sold as the work of either one of these two artists."

        • U Lun Gywe (b. Myanmar, 1930) Buffaloes, 1996
          Nov. 15, 2020

          U Lun Gywe (b. Myanmar, 1930) Buffaloes, 1996

          Est: RM12,000 - RM24,000

Water buffaloes once lorded over the padi-fields in Southeast Asia but have long been rendered obsolete by advance in agriculture technology. Reputed for their strength, diligence and loyalty, they were the farmers’ best friends in tilling the muddy rice-fields. Rice is still the main agricultural product of the country. The fable of the boy herder and the buffalo is a favourite in Chinese brush paintings as early as the Sung and Yuan periods, even now symbolising the symbiosis between Man and domesticated animals, as buffaloes roamed the wilds at least some 7,000 years ago. In Myanmar or what was formerly known as Burma, such laborious method might still be found in certain rural areas, as the military-ruled republic was a late bloomer in economic development after decades of civil war, stagnation and isolation. Myanmar was only admitted into Asean in 1997. U Lun Gywe, now an ailing 90, is without doubt the most revered and accomplished artist in Myanmar today.

A bustling market scene in Myanmar done in the typically old Impressionist Style and with imaginative play of a forest of towering large lotus-like umbrellas, the white allowing for intriguing play of light. Somewhat reminiscent of Eduard Manet's Music In The Tuileries, which had a more elegant and debonair crowd in elegant pursuits. But the figures are caught only from the top of the heads or further away as angled profiles instead of the full frontal assembly of the Tuileries. There is a light and convivial spirit about despite the ochre-tinged schematic in the lower half of the work with the sweaty multitude. Dubbed the greatest living artist in Myanmar, U Lun Gywe is a 3rd-generation Myanmar artist known for his Impressionism style of Burmese women and landscapes. He had a year's stint in China in 1964 (Beijing's Central Art Academy) and had also been trained in East Germany in art restoration in 1971, after receiving preliminary training in Yangon from the visiting Prof. Ingo Tim. He studied at the Art Institute of Teacher's Academy in Yangon where he learnt the finer points from masters U Thet Win, U Chit Maung, U San Win, U Ngwe Gaing and U Thein Han. From 1958 to 1979, he taught at the State School of Fine Arts in Yangon. His works are in the national collection of Myanmar, Singapore and Malaysia.
