  • HAGENAUER AUSTRIAN WOOD SCULPTURE OF AFRICAN WOMAN
    May. 18, 2024

HAGENAUER AUSTRIAN WOOD SCULPTURE OF AFRICAN WOMAN

    Est: $100 - $150

Franz Hagenauer, Austrian, 1906 to 1986, a hand carved wooden sculpture depicting a bust of an African woman with a brass necklace. Mounted on a brass base. Marked, Hagenauer, Wien, made in Austria, on the bottom. Franz Hagenauer created an extensive oeuvre characterized by a tension filled synthesis of sculpture and refined arts and crafts. Based on the human body and on shapes derived from the flora and fauna, Hagenauer went through all the modes of expression, influenced in phases by Neo Classicism, the Bauhaus movement, Art Deco and the topoi of popular culture. Often reduced to mere ovoids, his heads and busts from chased metal, created from the late 1920s, are among the most radical Modernist forays in Austrian art of the interwar period. Vintage and Modern European Sculptures, Statues, Figures, Home Decor, Interior Design, and Collectibles.

    Est: €5,000 - €6,000

FRANZ HAGENAUER ( Vienna, 1906-1986). "African portrait, c 1950". Hammered metal and plexiglass base. Publisher's stamps: with stamps on the base "MADE IN AUSTRIA" and the publisher's logo "wHw" (Werkstätte Hagenauer Wien). Size: 30 x 17 x 3 cm. In the 1950s, exotic motifs became very popular in Austria and were adopted by a wide variety of arts and crafts workshops. The main reason for this was that exotic regions and peoples were associated with predominantly positive emotions, such as harmonious coexistence, beautiful landscapes and harmony with nature. This was clearly expressed in the product range of Hagenauer's workshop. Figures of Africans, Asians and Indians were made in a wide variety of sizes and materials. Younger brother Franz Hagenauer (1906 - 1986) also became increasingly involved in the workshop and, of course, mainly in the creation of designs. Presumably, in the late 1930s, Franz Hagenauer also designed the first of his famous hammered brass plate heads. However, it took many years for these objects to gain acceptance in the art market. It was not until the 1960s that there was a growing demand for these heads and they were produced by the workshop. In the late 1940s, the workshop introduced a new and innovative technique that allowed the brass objects to be made black. In what is known as 'patination', brass objects are boiled in chemicals for a few minutes, which causes the surface to oxidise and turn black. Depending on the duration of the process, a slightly brownish to black colouring could be achieved. At the age of twelve, Franz Hagenauer attended Franz Cizek's youth course at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Vienna. He subsequently studied sculpture with Anton Hanak from 1921 onwards, and for his final year of studies he also completed the belt and metal workshop run by Josef Hoffmann. Franz Hagenauer was also highly praised by his teachers. Josef Hoffmann called him "technically and artistically extraordinarily talented, extremely ambitious and inventive". Already at this time (1925) he delivered works for the exhibition hall of the Paris World's Fair. From 1926 onwards, Franz worked in his father's business as a master belt maker, finding artistic fulfilment less in the creation of everyday and decorative objects than in his work as a sculptor. He soon created the large busts and figures that later became famous, mostly made of sheet brass. However, this line of models only gained increasing recognition in the 1960s and 1980s and aroused the interest of international art dealers. Franz Hagenauer became a member of the "Art Show" and took part in the Venice Biennale in 1934. A very important public contract concerned the design and manufacture of the large federal eagle in the Austrian Parliament. Other artistic objects, but also simple furnishings (taps, ashtrays, etc.) can be found in many public buildings. In 1950, Franz was awarded the City of Vienna Prize for Applied Arts. He was appointed head of the master class for free design in metal at the University of Applied Arts in 1962. He died in 1986 and the Hagenauer workshop was closed a year later.
