WATERCOLOR PAINTING SHIP IN COASTAL SCENE JACOB HAGG

    Est: $300 - $600

WATERCOLOR PAINTING SHIP IN COASTAL SCENE JACOB HAGG (Swedish 1839-1931). Watercolor, Ship in a coastal landscape. Signed & dated lower left “J Hagg 1871”. Artwork without frame SS: 9.5” wide x 5” high. Condition, very good. Note: Watercolor shown in ill-fitting mat-board that does not fit artwork. Note: Jakob Hagg. [1839-1931] was taught drawing and the use of watercolor, graphic techniques and oil as early as his time at school. He joined the Cadets School in Stockholm in 1857 and passed the officer’s exam in 1862. He was then active in various functions in the Navy, until he retired in 1904 and began to work as a naval historian, author and museum director. Parallel to this Hagg was a professional artist from 1860, already. His central motifs were always sailing ships and boats from different periods, rendered with the greatest attention to detail and historical accuracy. He painted works in oil and watercolor, but also produced etching and drawings. Today works by Jakob Hagg can be found in the Museum in Karlkrona, in the Sjofarts Museum in Gothenburg and in the Sjohistoriska Museum in Stockholm. Apart from Herman af Sillen (1857-1908) Jakob Hagg is considered one of the most important Swedish marine painters of his time.
