Hassan HAJJAJ ( Maroc, 1961) Untitled Photo, peinture et cadre pneus 64 X 55 cm Signée et daté en bas à droite 1421 (=1999) *** Print, paint and tyre frame Signed and dated lower right 1421 (=1999) Hassan Hajjaj, s’amuse à parodier l’orientalisme des photos de mode prises à Marrakech par des photographes européens, et portées par des modèles occidentaux. Il fait prendre les mêmes poses que ces mannequins par ses amis, sa famille ou les gens autour de lui, leur fait porter des vêtements fabriqués dans des tissus de contrefaçon de grandes marques comme Gucci, Vuiton ou Nike et leur mets aux pieds des babouches. Quelques fois, il pousse la coquetterie à leur faire porter des vêtements ou des accessoires qu’il crée lui-même. Sur ces vêtements, il multiplie les images de canettes de Coca Cola avec le logo écrit en arabe, les tasses de thé vert à la menthe, les babouches ou tout simplement quelques mots écrits dont souvent Yma (Maman). Passionné de Pop Art, de détournement et de récupération, certains l’ont surnommé tout comme le restaurant qu’il a décoré Andy Waloo - Je n’ai rien. Ses photos, belles et drôles à la fois n’en sont pas moins subversives. Elles dénoncent avec humour à la fois les perceptions pittoresques d’un ailleurs qui n’en est plus un , et le cynisme mercantile qui fait de la visibilité ostentatoire du logo la valeur suprême. English Hassan Hajjaj playfully parodies the orientalism of fashion photos taken in Marrakech by European photographers, featuring Western models. He has his friends, family, and people around him strike the same poses as these models, dressing them in garments made from counterfeit fabrics bearing the logos of major brands like Gucci, Vuiton, or Nike, and adorning their feet with babouches. At times, he takes it a step further by having them wear clothing or accessories he creates himself. On these garments, he proliferates images of Coca Cola cans with Arabic lettering, glasses of mint green tea, babouches, or simply some written words, often including "Yma" (Mom). A passionate follower of Pop Art, appropriation, and recycling, some have nicknamed him, just like the restaurant he decorated, "Andy Waloo - Je n'ai rien" (Andy Waloo - I have nothing). His photos, both beautiful and humorous, are nevertheless subversive. They humorously critique both the picturesque perceptions of a place that is no longer exotic and the mercenary cynicism that places ostentatious logo visibility above all else. H: 54 x L: 64 cm
