Jindrich Halabala Sold at Auction Prices

b. 1903 - d. 1978

Jindrich Halabala was a designer credited with ushering in the mass market production of furniture in his native Czechoslovakia. During the period between World War I and World War II, Halabala pioneered two fundamental series of modular furniture: the H and E style chairs featuring innovative tubular steel and legs, going on to inspire a generation of designers including Peter Protzman and Harry Bertoia. Halabala was born on May 24, 1903 in the town of Korycany, Czechoslovakia, and grew up training to become a cabinetmaker in his father’s joinery workshop. In 1920, he entered the State-owned Woodworking School in Valašské Mezirící, and completed his practical studies at the United Woodcrafts Manufacturers in Brno, later becoming the company’s chief designer.

Halabala died in Brno in 1978. His designs can be found in the permanent collections of institutions such as the Museum of Art in Olomouc and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Today, the Czech Republic issues an annual award in his name for excellence in furniture and interior design.

JINDRICH HALABALA for THONET (Czech Republic, 1903-1978). "Pair of armchairs", 1920. Carved wood. Featuring later period upholstery. Slightly worn. Measures: 75 x 70 x 86 cm (x2). The Jindrich Halabala armchair is an icon of modern design. Its innovative style and functionality make it a unique and timeless piece. Its curved and ergonomic structure provides comfort and support to the user, adapting perfectly to their body shape. The use of high quality materials and its meticulous finish make it durable and resistant. In addition, its minimalist and elegant design adapts to any style of decoration, making it the centre of attention in any space. Jindrich Halabala's armchair is a true example of how design can combine sophistication, comfort and practicality in a single piece. Jind?ich Halabala was a prominent designer and architect. He is recognised as one of the most influential figures in modern furniture design in the Czech Republic during the first half of the 20th century. Born in the town of Koryany, Halabala studied architecture at the Technical University of Brno. After graduating, he began working as a furniture designer at the UP Závody company in Brno. It was at this time that he began to develop his distinctive style, which was characterised by a combination of geometric shapes and innovative materials. In 1930, Jindrich Halabala became the head of the design department of the UP Závody company, where he worked until 1948. During this time, he created a wide range of furniture, including armchairs, chairs, tables and cabinets, which were characterised by their functionality and modern aesthetics. Halabala's best-known work is the "H Chair", also known as the "Hatík Chair", which was created in 1925. This chair became an icon of avant-garde design and is still considered a classic piece of furniture today. In addition to his work in furniture, Jindrich Halabala also worked in architecture and interior design. He was involved in the creation of several homes and public buildings in different parts of the Czech Republic. After the communist coup d'état in Czechoslovakia in 1948, Halabala's design style fell out of favour due to its association with the aesthetics of the interwar period. Despite this, he continued to work as an architect and designer until his death in 1978, leaving an important legacy in the world of furniture design. Today, furniture designed by Jindrich Halabala is valued and sought after by collectors and lovers of retro design. His influence and legacy lives on as a significant contribution to the modernist movement and 20th century design.
