Matted, glazed and framed. sight 9-3/4" x 21-3/4", framed 22" x 31-1/2" Provenance: Marjorie Kauffman Graphics, Houston, Texas; Collection of Polly and Ed Renwick, New Orleans, Louisiana. Literature: https://www.yamasa.com/musee/en/info/ Notes: Hamaguchi was the first Japanese artist to attempt and excel at the painstaking, time-consuming and difficult technique of mezzotint print-making, a decidedly Western medium that reached its height of popularity in the 17th and early 18th centuries. A native of Tokyo, Hamaguchi was born into a financially secure business family that included numerous artist and collectors. He initially enrolled in the Tokyo Art School (now Tokyo University of the Arts) to study sculpture before leaving for France where he studied various Western art techniques in Paris. At the encouragement of his friend the poet e.e. cummings, who gifted him the tools, he began to produce mezzotint prints. Hamaguchi's compositions of fruits and vegetables, set front and center against a dark, velvety background, worked well with the tonality and texture inherent in the medium. Equally popular in Japan and Europe, he is considered the driving force behind the mid-century resurgence of the mezzotint. The recipient of numerous awards, honors and accolades, Hamaguchi was a member of the Salon d'Automne, the Japanese representative at the 1960 Venice Biennale, received the Grand Prize in printmaking at the Sao Paulo Biennial in 1957, and is one of the few artists to have a museum named in his honor - the Musee Hamaguchi Yozo in Tokyo.

Yozo Hamaguchi (Japanese, 1909-2000) Seventeen Cherries 1968, pencil signed and annotated 'h.c.' (aside from the edition of 50), with full margins. Mezzotint in colors on BFK Rives. image: 9 3/4 x 20 1/4 in. (24.8 x 51.4cm) sheet: 19 5/8 x 25 1/2 in. (49.8 x 64.8cm) [Chuokoron Bijutsu Shuppan, 109] Note Mezzotint printmaking was a popular reproduction technique widely used in Europe throughout the 17th-19th centuries, but fell out of favor with the introduction of photography. Yozo Hamaguchi, a Japanese-born artist famously known for his mezzotint engravings, played a crucial role in the resurgence of the method and medium in the mid-20th century. Hamaguchi was born in Wakayama Prefecture in 1909 and first studied sculpture at the University of Arts in Tokyo in 1927. Three years later, he left Japan and travelled to Paris, where he took up oil painting, watercolors and copper-plate engraving. During this time, he became part of an international group of artists and writers and was introduced to the poet E. E. Cummings. They became close friends, and it was Cummings who gave Hamaguchi his first tools for making mezzotints. Over the years, he continued to experiment with the medium and eventually developed an original technique for copper-plate etchings and engravings. Similar to the still life genre, Hamaguchi’s work predominantly focused on specific details or a single object, which was then contrasted against a velvety black background. Seventeen Cherries is a prime example of this mastery of the mezzotint printmaking process. In this work, as well as in Asparagus and Tricot (lot 75), Hamaguchi has skillfully captured tonality, texture and light in both color and monochrome. In the 1950s, Hamaguchi began to receive major prizes and participate in international exhibitions, including the São Paulo Biennale in 1957 and the Venice Biennale in 1960. His first major retrospective in Japan was held in 1985 at the Tokyo Yurakucho Art Forum and The National Museum of Modern Art, Osaka. Hamaguchi's legacy is still celebrated today by the Musee Hamaguchi Yozo, which was established in 1998 and recognizes his contributions to Japanese art. Overall in excellent original condition. One or two small scattered spots of possible foxing in margins. This is outside of the image area and unobtrusive. Slight undulation to paper, primarily to printed image. There is a miniscule pinhole present to lower left and to lower right corner of the printed image. All four edges are deckled. One or two small scattered spots of possible foxing verso. One or two small scattered areas of slight discoloration verso, probably due to handling, including some light smudging to right edge (see Specialist photos for detailed shots). The paper is hinged verso in the top left and right corners with tape. Hinge at top left has been previously cut. Frame: 22 1/2 x 28 5/8 x 1 5/8 in.
