The woman is wearing ragged clothes and the rope attached to her is a sort of lifeline, so that when she steps into the mud up to her chest, she avoids any accidents in case she slips and falls. They wear the rags to protect the body from any abrasions caused by the rope." [4]

HIROSHI HAMAYA (1915-1999) Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong, Beijing, China 1956

        Est: €3,500 - €4,000

Vintage silver print 29,7 x 19,8 cm (11.7 x 7.8 in) Photographer's copyright stamp on the reverse, various numerical notations (incl. date) and annotations in Japanese on the reverse LITERATURE Hamaya Hiroshi, Eye. Photographs 1935-1967, Oiso 1968; Hamaya Hiroshi, Fifty Years of Photography 1930-1981. Aspects of Life & Aspects of Nature, Tokyo 1981. Shooting from an extreme angle from below, Hamaya Hiroshi shows the progatonists Zhou Enlai and Mao Zedong facing each other and looking directy into each other's eyes. The two men are sharply contrasted against the lighter background, and Mao's face is in shadow, emphasising the dominance and power of the two figures. Zhou Enlai was an important leader of the Chinese Communist Party and Prime Minister of the People's Republic from the time of its proclamation in 1949 to his death in 1976. This close confidante of Mao Zedong was considered a leading intellectual light. In 1956, when this photograph was taken, Mao Zedong proclaimed the "Hundred Flowers Campaign", during which people were asked to voice their criticism of the state; however, one year later this was already curtailed. During his stay of several months in China, Hamaya Hiroshi documented not only official events, but also China's rural population. In 1960 he became the first Asian photographer to be made a full member of Magnum.
