              § RICHARD HAMILTON C.H. (BRITISH 1922-2011) SELF-PORTRAIT (LULLIN 36) - 1949

              Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Richard Hamilton SELF-PORTRAIT (LULLIN 36) - 1949 Open-bite on aquatint and textured soft-ground, roulette and stipple, one of only a few impressions pulled, there was no published edition, printed by the artist at the Slade School, London The current owner's mother was tutored by Hamilton while attending art school in Newcastle in the 1950s, and the family believe these were gifted to her by the artist at that time. It is conventional for an artist, especially early in their career, to use their own likeness as model – a resource economically free and readily available, so both practical and also an opportunity for self-reflection or even, for some, self-promotion. In this case, Hamilton used the free resource as a subject for experimentation with process. The resulting portrait is both free and immediate, though further engagement reveals the artist’s particular interest in exploring printmaking technique at this time. Lullin describes this early self-portrait and its unusual technical process in detail: 'Hamilton's earliest printed self-portrait presents his long, narrow face in a highly schematic manner. Nevertheless, we can readily recognise his generous lips, deep-set eyes and high forehead. The etching process allowed Hamilton to use pronounced light and dark tones to bring out the structure of his face. The overall harmony of this frontal view of the artist's head was achieved by unusual technical means. It was drawn from his reflection in a mirror directly on a small plate that carried an aquatint ground. Acid was dripped on the plate with a small brush. The process of biting is uncontrollable because the liquid contracts immediately into a globule which bites as an irregular spot, the tone of which will depend of the time it stays there- another indeterminate. The artist evidently found it necessary to introduce a measure of greater control by applying a new ground this time using a soft ground broken by laying a piece of fabric on the plate and applying light pressure. The process of dripping acid continued until the plate was finally cleaned and was followed by a little touching up with roulettes and stipple, which consist simply of pressing a sharp metal point into the plate to make clusters of dots to hold a tone.' (Etienne Lullin, Richard Hamilton: Prints and Multiples, 1939-2002, (Düsseldorf: Kunstmuseum Winterthur, Yale Center for British Art & Richter Verlag, 2003)). plate size 12.5cm x 8.6cm (5in x 3.4in), the sheet 15.8cm x 11.4cm (6.25in x 4.5in)

              § RICHARD HAMILTON C.H. (BRITISH 1922-2011) MAN WALKING (AFTER MUYBRIDGE), (LULLIN 44) - 1953

              Est: £2,000 - £3,000

Richard Hamilton MAN WALKING (AFTER MUYBRIDGE), (LULLIN 44) - 1953 Etching and aquatint, 5/10, signed and numbered in pencil to margin, printed and published by the Artist The current owner's mother was tutored by Hamilton while attending art school in Newcastle in the 1950s, and the family believe these were gifted to her by the artist at that time. plate size 25cm x 17.2cm (9.75in x 6.75in), the sheet 30.4cm x 20.8cm (12in x 8.25in) Richard Hamilton became one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century. He had a strong artistic output, influential teaching career, and the distinguishing claim of being the first artist to define ‘Pop’ art in 1957: ‘Popular (designed for a mass audience), Transient (short‑term solution), Expendable (easily forgotten), Low cost, Mass produced, Young (aimed at youth), Witty, Sexy, Gimmicky, Glamorous and Big business.’ Art would never be the same again. These compelling intaglio prints pre-date Hamilton's discourses on Pop. Dating to shortly after his graduation from art college, they show Hamilton playing with form and technique and offer a glimpse of some of the themes that would continue to preoccupy him throughout his artistic career, even as he continued to innovate and evolve. Man Walking (After Muybridge) takes as its source one of the iconic and pioneering photographs taken by Eadweard Muybridge in an attempt to capture and convey movement. Although not modern or new by the time Hamilton was engaging with the image as a source text, they represent a significant scientific and technological advance for the time, and at some level indicate an interest in modernity, so it is maybe not surprising that they would engage Hamilton who spent his life engaged with the ‘modern.’ Yet there is a classical element too: the depiction of the human form and its movement, the importance of technical skill in draughtsmanship and also in the use of the techniques of printmaking. This early work was both printed and published by the artist in a very small edition, and the contrast of the etched line and ‘wash’ finish of the aquatint is both playful in spirit and successful in the communication of movement.

RICHARD HAMILTON (London 1922–2011 Nothend) Picasso's meninas. 1973. Aquatint and drypoint etching. 32/90. Signed in pencil lower right: R. Hamilton, also titled lower left: Picasso's meninas. Image 57.1 × 49.1 cm on wove paper by Rives 75.5 × 56.7 cm. Pulished by Propyläen Verlag, Berlin/ Pantheon Press, Rome. Printed by Crommelynck, Paris. From the 69-part portfolio "Hommage à Picasso". Catalogue raisonné: Lullin, no. 91. “Las Meninas” by Diego Velázquez from 1656 is without doubt one of the most important paintings in the history of art. Between August and November 1957 Pablo Picasso (1881–1973) examined the work intensively and Richard Hamilton (1922–2011) after his first visit to the Prado in 1972 was so powerfully affected by the painting, that he used it as the framework for his print in honour of Picasso. He copied the spatial arrangement and position of the staffage exactly but replaced the royal family with figures from all the periods of Picasso’s oeuvre. He presented Picasso’s artistic mastery as on a stage: On the right edge of the picture we find a harlequin from the pink period, who appears to be treading on a bull from Picasso’s masterpiece “Guernica”. Behind the bull to the right we have a seated woman, modelled after “Femmes assises” of 1927 (Zervos, vol. 7, no. 7); to her right is a figure typical of the late 1930s. In the next row there is a woman, who is reminiscent of Picasso’s Neo-Classical style of the early 1920s and next to her a figure of an archaic style, which we know from “Les demoiselles d’Avignon” (Zervos, vol. 2, no. 18). In the centre of the picture is an Analytic-Cubist figure, who again turns to a woman from the Neo-Classical period. Pablo Picasso himself takes up the central position of Velázquez before the easel. In the mirror on the back wall, where in the original painting the royal couple can be seen, we see reflected Richard Hamilton and his partner. Even the painting on the back wall has been replaced by Picasso’s paintings: “Nu couché et femme assise” from 1942 (Zervos, vol. 12, no. 69) and “Three Musicians” from 1921 (Zervos, vol. 4, no. 331). There is probably no other work in art history which brings together the achievement and uniqueness of an artist so impressively, and without any doubt expresses the admiration and recognition of his unique body of work. That Pablo Picasso was the most important and most influential artist of the 20th century, is, according to this impressive homage, beyond all question. --------------- RICHARD HAMILTON (London 1922–2011 Nothend) Picasso's meninas. 1973. Aquatinta- und Kaltnadelradierung. 32/90. ---------------
