Hammond, Harmony (American, contemporary), Transformation VII, 1987, monoprint on BFK Rives paper, signed and dated to the lower right corner, additionally signed, dated and titled on the backing board, image size 21 x 15.5 inches, sheet size 41 x 29.5 inches, floated in a light wood frame 44 x 32 inches. From the Aldrich Museum's website, "Hammond, who came out as a lesbian in 1973, was on the forefront of the feminist and lesbian art movement in New York in the early ‘70s. She was a founding member of A.I.R., the first women's cooperative gallery in the city, and of the journal Heresies: A Feminist Publication of Art and Politics. She organized A Lesbian Art Show, the first of its kind, at 112 Greene Street Workshop in Soho in 1978, and her book, Lesbian Art in America (2000), is still the definitive tome on the subject." Provenance: from the personal collection of art historian Ann Sutherland Harris, Pittsburgh, PA. In 1976 Harris, along with feminist art historian Linda Nochlin, co-curated the Women Artists: 1550-1950 exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and co-authored the accompanying catalog. The show also travelled to Austin, Brooklyn and Pittsburgh, and helped to open up the field of women’s studies in the discipline. Harris was a founding member and first president of the Women’s Caucus for Art. She wrote nine books and exhibition catalogues (including works on Artemisia Gentileschi and Alice Neel), more than a hundred articles and reviews, and was part of the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh from 1984-2012.

Harmony Hammond is an artist, writer, and curator known for her contributions to the feminist art movement in New York City. In the 1970s, she co-founded A.I.R., the first women's cooperative art gallery, and Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art & Politics. In addition to her work as a feminist, Hammon is also a queer arts advocate: her book, Lesbian Art in America: A Contemporary History (2000), received a Lambda Literary Award and is regarded as the primary text on the history of lesbian art in the US. Today she lives and works in Northern New Mexico, where she maintains her post-minimalist, politically topical artistic practice, blurring the lines between painting and sculpture. Her illustrious career includes a solo museum survey in 2019, "Material Witness, Five Decades of Art" at the Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art in Ridgefield, CT; and her participation in significant group shows such as "WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution" at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Her work is featured in many public collections, including the MoMA, the Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, underscoring her impact on feminist and queer art. Hammond is represented by Alexander Gray Associates in New York City, where she has had four solo exhibitions in the past decade. She is also currently featured in the 2024 Whitney Biennial.

This work was created for the "AdoRnmenTs" exhibition at Bernice Steinbaum Gallery, New York. For the exhibition, 81 artists and architects contributed a piece of wearable art or jewelry, including Nancy Fried, Howardena Pindell, Faith Ringgold, Miriam Schapiro, and Jaune Quick-To-See Smith.
