It is Bernard de St Aignan who tells us the most about the artist: ‘Hamri was painting long before he knew it was called painting and, in various Moorish cafés in Rabat, he covered very large frescoes, or more exactly, he painted large murals, having fun rather than working seriously. It was only three years ago that he began to paint more diligently and, in 1953, with the help of M. His work is based on Moroccan folklore, interpreted with the true temperament of a painter who does not hesitate to transpose, to such an extent that many of his canvases are almost pure abstraction, where the initial subject is no more than a pretext to which he has added his personal music’ in La Renaissance de l'Art musulman, 1954, pp. 54-56."

Mohamed Hamri (1932-2000) Mohamed Hamri, who is mainly known as Hamri, was a Moroccan painter and author. He had an important role in the cooperation of the Rolling Stones with the Moroccan band Master Musicians of Joujouka. An artwork by Hamri decorates the combined disk by the lead guitarist of the Rolling Stones, Brian Jones, and the Master Musicians of Joujouka. Hamri himself was part of the Beat Generation of Tangier, a port where a center for experimental writers flourished in the fifties. Hamri's tutor in painting was the artist Brion Gysin, who introduced him to the art of modern European painters. In 1952, Gysin und Hamri showed their works in a joint exhibition. In addition, they opened the 1001 Nights Restaurant together in Tangier that was next to the private house of Hamri a meeting point for the art scene. Between 1974 and 1978, Hamri went travelling to pursue his activity as a painter and to promote his book 'The Tales of Joujouka'. In 1992, he took part in the exhibition 'The Here to Go Show' in Dublin that had William Burroughs, Brion Gysin and the Tangier Beat scene as a topic. During his lifetime he had more than 50 exhibitions in Morocco, Spain, Lebanon, Canary Islands, Germany, United States, Great Britain and Ireland. Recently, a retrospective of his oeuvre was held at Laurence-Arnott Gallery in Tangier.
