Barrass現代中國書法與藝術品收藏 Han Xin was born into a cultured Shanghai family and exposed to Chinese paintings and reproductions of international art at an early age. In his mid-20s, after studying  at Beijing's China Central Academy of Fine Arts, he went to  the United States. He has exhibited extensively in China, the United States, and France. He is known for his paintings that explore the intersection of traditional Chinese painting and modern life, as well as for his use of symbolism to represent the complexities of history and culture. A major exhibition of his work was held in the Hanart TZ Gallery in 1997, where the works in the current lot were exhibited. Two sides of the Water: At the middle of this piece is a representation of the rivers that were of such importance to China that they were embroidered on some of the Imperial robes.  To the left Mao Zedong can be seen swimming against the tide, to the right Deng Xiaoping goes with the flow. The Philosophy (Deng Xiaoping): Han Xin was listening to the radio in Columbus Ohio on the night of 19 February 1997, when he heard that Deng had died.  He greatly admired Deng’s ‘philosophy’, which unlike Mao’s was very pragmatic. In this painting Deng is shown carrying two very fat, immensely long, pet cats -one sly black, one grinning white—and he is looking at It is a play on Deng’s philosophy that ‘it doesn’t matter whether a cat is black or white, what matters is whether it can catch mice.’  To the right the sky ranges from stormy dark to comforting brightness. This is to make the point that you will have to adapt to changing conditions, which Deng was so good at.
