Hardy, who was 86 at the time and only lived for another 2 years, was clearly delighted with Silver's portrayal and the reviews are also very effusive in their praise: Miss Silver's exquisite art was in itself a contribution of the highest poetic worth...the acting of this Tess was perfect in its simplicity, its tenderness, and pathos and had a startled tremulous beauty that was all Miss Silver's own (Daily Telegraph).

Thomas Hardy Signed Postcard

A postcard featuring a bust of the famous Wessex author Thomas Hardy, clearly and strongly signed by Hardy. The postcard is in very good condition, with slight wear to the corners and residue of a previous mounting on the verso. It was formerly in the Stanley Gibbons collection. An excellent display piece that beautifully presents a rare and highly desirable signature in a context that adds interest and visual appeal. The photograph is of a bust of Hardy by the Russian nobleman, politician and artist, Serge Yourievitch. Yourievitch was born in Paris. After returning to Russia he served as a tutor to Tsar Alexander II and then as a court official for Nicholas II, the last Romanov ruler of imperial Russia. His work as a sculptor is well regarded, and Hardy sat for him at the author's home, Max Gate, in Dorchester. While he enjoyed Yourievitch's company, he hated the experience of sitting, and vowed never to repeat the ordeal again. Hardy (1840–1928) was an English author whose seminal works include Jude the Obscure (1895), Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1891) and Far from the Madding Crowd (1874). His work is still popular today and adapted into other media around the world.

Sassoon held Hardy in high esteem; he carried a collection of his poems with him while at the front and had dedicated The Old Huntsman to him in 1917 (see lot XXX). Hardy's biographer Michael Millgate notes that while Hardy was preparing the present volume for publication, his wife Florence "came upon him one day talking to himself about the iniquities of critics, until he suddenly burst out with: 'I wrote my poems for men like Siegfried Sassoon'". Initially published anonymously in monthly instalments in the Cornhill Magazine from January to December 1874, each with a full-page illustration and vignette initial by Helen Paterson (who became Helen Allingham during the run when she married the poet William Allingham in August 1874). In a later letter to Edmund Gosse, Hardy described her as "the best illustrator I ever had" (Purdy, p.13).
