JAMES HARRIS OF SWANSEA (1810-1887), BRITISHSHIPPING AT WORM’S HEAD, 1871Oil on canvas; signed “Harris” and dated “1871” lower right14.25" x 22.25" — 36.2 x 56.5 cm.Provenance:Coll. of the Late Lord Glantawe (John James Jenkins) of Swansea, Wales possibly purchased directly from the artist; With Haynes Art Gallery, Toronto for cleaning on May 25,1948;By descent to his granddaughter, TorontoExhibited:In 1987, there was a retrospective exhibition of Harris’ work held at the Glynn Vivian Art Gallery in Swansea. A very similar, larger oil painting by Harris, measuring 60 cm. x 106.5 cm., entitled “Worms Head from the Sea”, dated circa 1870, was shown in this exhibit.Note:Historically named 'Wurm' meaning 'dragon' by Viking invaders, the promontory, Worm's Head, is shaped like a giant sea-serpent and marks the most westerly tip of Gower Pennisula. Harris executed a number of paintings of Worm’s Head - He is known to have undertaken several commissions of specific ships with local backgrounds, such as Swansea or Mumbles and Mumbles Lighthouse. He went out to sea and painted from the sea looking back at the landscape. The Late Lord Glantawe moved to the Grange in Swansea. He was knighted in 1882 and may have purchased this work directly from James Harris to hang in the Grange. Estimate: $4,000—5,000

      Oct. 05, 2016

James Harris of Swansea (British, 1810-1887) Shipping in Swansea Bay

      Est: £12,000 - £18,000

James Harris of Swansea (British, 1810-1887) Shipping in Swansea Bay signed 'Jas/Harris' (lower right) oil on canvas 99 x 155cm (39 x 61in). Footnotes It is quite rare for any vessel in Harris's paintings to be named, however going by the name on the port bow and the pennant being flown from her mainmast, the lead vessel is a barque named Fearless. It has proven difficult to track any details about Fearless, but unfortunately not all vessels were recorded in Lloyd's annual register. Pilot boat number 4 featured in the lower right of the composition was named Faith. She was built around 1845 and was approximately 35 feet long. Over the years she competed in a number of races with other pilot boats from Neath and Port Talbot as well as Swansea. In 1845 she came in first amongst thirteen other boats, and in 1854 led from start to finish amongst nine boats in the race. In 1858 she tied for first, in 1862 came third, but due to a mishap in 1863 came last. She survived until about 1870 when replaced by the pilot boat Benson. Looking beyond the shipping scene in the foreground, one can see Oystermouth in the distance, which is on the west side of Swansea Bay and south of Swansea itself. R.G. Howell's book 'Under Sail - Swansea Cutters, Tallships and Seascapes' published in 1987 features a number of Harris's paintings and judging from the compositions in the publication it is likely that the present work was painted in the 1850s.
