Blumen Hartinger, Anton Stillleben mit Alpenblumen. 1886. Öl auf Malkarton. 31 x 39 cm. Oil on board. Signed "Anton Hartinger fec." and dated. On the verso with hardly readable export stamp. Framed in a gold-coloured stucco frame with acanthus leaf and pearl band decoration. - With isolated superficial colour abrasion along the edges. Isolated very fine craquelure. Varnish yellowed and darkened. No retouches visible under UV light. Good overall. Floral still life in the classical manner of the Viennese Biedermeier. - With a very fine painterly quality, various Alpine flowers unfold before our eyes, skilfully draped by Anton Hartinger against an Alpine mountain backdrop. The Viennese painter had been fascinated by the splendour of flowers and blossoms since his training and specialised in botanical illustrations and flower painting. His work was so genuine that it had the character of botanical documentation and Hartinger was appointed corrector at the Vienna Academy's School of Flower and Fruit Painting in 1836. The artist also received generous support from Archduke Anton who was also a lover of flowers. Oriented on the classical flower still lifes of 17th century Dutch painting, Hartinger knew how to win over the public of the Biedermeier period by capturing the beauty of the blossoms in great detail and the wide variety and diversity of the flowers. Our painting is from the artist's late work. 1200

          ANTON HARTINGER 1806 - 1890 - FLORAL STILL LIFE

          Est: -

Anton Hartinger as an artist certainly belongs to the tradition of Viennese floral painting. His teachers included Sebastian Wegmayr, and the influence of the Biedermeier tradition is evident. In his work "Korrektor" at the Academy, of which he was a member until 1851, he also created numerous depictions of flowers and plants for scientific purposes. He also portrayed fruit still lifes. In 1812, he founded his own class of floral painting at the academy, which, together with the growing scientific interest in botany, played a key role in the continuity of this genre. The first generation of Viennese Biedermeier flower painters was still indebted to Dutch masters in terms of painting style and color choice. The still life with a rabbit and flowers is a very sophisticated work, where flowers and fruits from different seasons meet with botanical precision and butterflies, a bumblebee and an ant sit on them, and a white rabbit, which is completely unique in Hartiger's paintings, chews a juicy plum leaf. It symbolically accentuates the motif and its vital composition. The cloudy landscape in the background adds an unprecedented dramatic dimension to the still life genre. 1873. 65 cm x 54 cm. Rahmen. Oil on canvas. Signed and dated 1873.
