              Marsden Hartley (1877 - 1943) American

              Est: $3,500 - $5,500

Marsden Hartley (1877 - 1943) Graphite on paper, signed and dated lower right "Marsden Hartley 27", measures 7 x 10 inches and 13 x 16 inches w/frame. Born in Lewiston, Maine, Marsden Hartley became one of the most famous early modernist artists of twentieth-century American art, known for landscapes, still lifes, and some portraits. His painting showed a focus on monumental shapes, especially clouds and landscape forms, and his unique style has been described by critic Sadakichi Hartmann as "an extreme and up-to-date impressionism" and "emerging modernism that evolved through Impressionism". (Gerdts 291) He had a lonely, insecure childhood because his mother died when he was eight years old, and he was raised by an older sister when his father left to remarry. He studied art in Cleveland, Ohio and then in 1898 went to the Chase School in New York and at the National Academy of Design. He continued to spend much time in Maine painting landscapes, and by 1909 had his first exhibition, which was held at New York Gallery 291, run by Alfred Stieglitz.

History of an American, Alfred Stieglitz: ‘291’ and After: Selections from the Artists Shown by Him from 1900 to 1925, an exhibition catalogue, Taft Museum, Cincinnati, 1951 p. 15, no. 86 (illustrated as Pansies).  Lot Essay The present Lot is included by Gail R. Scott in the Marsden Hartley Legacy Project: Complete Paintings and Works on Paper.  Pansy, a striking solitary yellow flower set against a dynamic purple backdrop, is a wonderful example by Hartley. The simplicity of the composition contrasts with the flower’s bold and distinctive form - a result of Hartley’s intentional and expressive brushwork that injects a sense of movement and energy into the piece. Through a touch of abstraction, the artist highlights the graphic qualities of the flower, distilling it to fundamental elements and stylizing its petals, center, and overall structure in adherence to a modernist aesthetic. Hartley’s use of a vibrant color palette amplifies the overall visual impact of the work, which commands the viewer’s attention. It also elicits a spectrum of emotions, from joy and warmth to introspection as pansies are generally associated with sentiments of love, remembrance, and thoughtfulness.

              Est: $2,000 - $3,000

MARSDEN HARTLEY Grapes. Lithograph, 1923. 248x310 mm; 9 7/8x12 1/4 inches, full margins. Signed and dated in pencil, lower right. A superb, richly-inked impression of this early, very scarce lithograph. We have found only two other impressions at auction in the past 30 years. Hartley (1877-1943) was a member of the "Stieglitz Group," under the patronage of the famed gallerist and early champion of modern art in America, Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) who arranged the artist's first solo exhibition in 1909 at his 291 Gallery in New York. This was a major turning point in Hartley's career; through Stieglitz he met and became influenced by other emerging artists such as Charles Demuth (1883-1935), Arthur Dove (1880-1946), John Marin (1870-1953) and Georgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986). Growing up in Maine and Cleveland, Hartley showed promise as a young artist and was funded by an art patron to study in New York in 1899. He studied with William Merritt Chase (1849-1916) at his New York School and at the National Academy of Design. But it was not until he gained the support of Stieglitz and the artist Arthur B. Davies (1862-1928), a senior member of the Stieglitz circle, that he was able to travel to Paris. In France, Hartley closely studied the Post-Impressionist and Cubist masterpieces and experimented in these styles. From Paris, he traveled through Europe and arrived in Berlin. Adopting a bold new style, Hartley exhibited with the avant-garde Der Blaue Reiter group in 1913. He revisited Berlin in 1914, producing his most iconic works of the War Motif series, following the death of his purported romantic partner, a German World War I soldier named Karl von Freyburg. These paintings are comprised of bold, sweeping colors, German insignia and undulating flattened shapes. Ingenious and innovative, Hartley drew from the two-dimensionality of the Cubists and the spiritualism, raw emotion and subjectivity of the Expressionists. Hartley traveled around the world throughout his career, often deeply embedding himself in his surroundings. His works slowly became less abstract as his career advanced. University of Kansas 4.

Note This work is included in the Marsden Hartley Legacy Project: Complete Paintings and Works on Paper, Bates College Museum of Art, Lewiston, Maine, Gail R. Scott, director. Marsden Hartley was an important figure of the New York avant-garde movement of the 1910s, long associated with Alfred Stieglitz’s legendary Gallery 291, which is credited for introducing European Modernism to American collectors. In 1912, with the financial support of Arthur B. Davies, the artist travelled to Europe, where he encountered the work of Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, who would become lifelong inspirations, as exemplified by the present still life. Recalling Cézanne's flat taple top still lifes, Still Life with Fruit is a work of pictorial investigation, showcasing Hartley's intense geometric distillation of form. Here, the artist fuses the tabletop, the tablecloth and the neutral background into a blur of interlocking Cubist-like shards of colors and shapes. Following his meeting with American poet Walt Whitman in New York in 1899, Hartley believed that an artist's subject matter represented a form of self-portraiture, and often used his paintings, especially his still lifes, as vehicles for his own personal thoughts, referencing the most intimate parts of his life. It is tempting to see a coded male symbolism in the present work. The phallic pears would then become a way to suggest the artist's buried same-sex desires, here sublimized by a spiritual and delicate sensibility. In very good, almost excellent original condition. Examination under UV light reveals remnants of old greenish varnish in select areas, indicating a partial cleaning. Only two dots of inpaintings, both very minimal, can be seen on the far left red apple and the bottom center green apple (an inpainted flake in each case). See Specialist's pictures for more details. Frame: 21 3/4 x 39 1/2 x 1 1/4 in. To request additional information, please email Raphaël Chatroux at [email protected]
