He was known as the ‘Bohemian Brueghel’, even though he worked almost 100 years after Jan Brueghel. But Johann Jacob Hartmann clearly drew on this great Fleming and other Netherlandish masters who were active at the Prague court at the beginning of the 17th century when developing his own style. He is considered one of the best painters in Bohemia of his time. Although this small copper painting is not signed, it combines all the stylistic features and quality of Johann Jacob Hartmann's works despite its small format.

Each inscribed "Hartmann" on the reverse in old script. Johann Jacob Hartmann was the first Bohemian painter to specialise in landscape painting in the Mannerist style, which had been established generations earlier by Rudolf II's court artists in Prague. Like his predecessors, for example Gillis van Coninxloo or Anton Mirou, Hartmann often divided his landscape compositions into two parts, which, as in the present pair of paintings, merge to form a panorama-like landscape.

Gemäldepaar DARSTELLUNGEN AUS DEM ALTEN TESTAMENT Öl auf Kupfer. Je ca. 39,5 x 55 cm. In vergoldeten Rahmen. Das erste Gemälde zeigt in weiter Landschaft den schlafenden Jakob unterhalb eines mit Bäumen bewachsenen felsigen Hügeln sitzend, der seinen Kopf auf seine rechte Hand abstützt. Er ist gekleidet in ein blaues Gewand mit rotem Umhang und hat ein aufgeschlagenes Buch, einen großen Krug und einen Laib Brot vor sich liegen. Jakob war auf dem Weg nach Haran, der Heimat seiner Mutter, als ihm im Traum ein Engel erscheint und Gott auf diese Weise mit ihm spricht. Auf dem Gemälde ist dieser Engel mit großen weißen Flügeln hinter ihm stehend zu sehen, der zudem mit seinem ausgestreckten linken Arm auf den Himmel verweist. Das zweite Gemälde bezieht sich auf die Bibelstelle, bei der ein Engel Hagar und Ismael erscheint. Auf der linken Bildseite sieht man eine weite Flusslandschaft, die sich unmittelbar an das erstgenannte Gemälde anschließen könnte. Der eigentliche Ort der Handlung ist auf der rechten Seite im Vordergrund zu erkennen, dessen Hintergrund von hohen Bäumen gesäumt ist. Hagar, die Magd von Abraham und Sara, war mit ihrem neugeborenen Sohn weggeschickt worden. Als ihr Sohn dem Tode in der Wüste nahe ist, erscheint ihr ein Engel und zeigt ihr eine rettende Wasserstelle. Sara sitzt hier in einem weißen Gewand und rotem Umhang am Boden und hält die Windeln ihres liegenden Sohnes Ismael. Rechts von ihr ein Korb, Laken und Reiseutensilien sowie ein Stock. Links von ihr steht, in einem gelb-blauen Gewand mit weißen Flügeln, der ihr erschienene Engel, der sie zu einer Wasserstelle weist und sie auffordert, zurückzukehren. Malerei in der typischen Manier des Künstlers, jeweils mit Ausblick in die Ferne und hohem leuchtend blauen Himmel mit weißen Wolkenformationen. Rest., kleinere Retuschen. Anmerkung: Die beiden Gemälde wurden unter dem Künstlernamen bereits am 4. Dezember 2014 bei Sotheby‘s in London als das Lot 147 versteigert. Ription Johann Jacob Hartmann (Kuttenberg c. 1680 - after 1728 Prague) Wooded river landscape with resting travellers, oil on copper, 44 x 59.5 cm, framed, (GS) Provenance: Georges Beets Collection, Brussels; Pierre Mercier Collection, Brussels; Belgian private collection. Literature: S. Speth-Holterhoff, La Collection de M. Georges Beetz, in: Revue Apollo, March 1943. p. 16. These two landscape pendants probably have an allegorical meaning and used to be old Belgian family property. They are characteristic works by the highly talented Bohemian landscapist Johann Jacob Hartmann. He is described in Thieme-Becker as follows: "His landscapes and architectural views, arranged in three planes and populated by numerous tiny and colourful figures, show a variety of solutions of colouristic problems and number among the most superior achievements in Bohemia of that period. His works were much sought after and were mostly shipped abroad. Hartmann's landscapes, most of which feature small formats and a delicate, meticulous style, were inspired by the Flemish artists active at the court of Rudolf II, such as Jan Brueghel the Elder and Roland Savery." His paintings, including the present pendants, mostly are of breathtaking quality and number among the best works produced in Bohemia in the 18th century. R. Baumstark writes about Hartmann: "In terms of painterly quality, the bustling figures in these masterpieces of early 18th-century Bohemian landscape painting are equal to those of Jan Brueghel the Elder. In spite of various inspirations, these landscapes are not piecemeal. Hartmann rather suceeds in combining different pictorial traditions and creating an atmospherically charming vision that goes beyond a descRiption of nature and human activity." (44.2 x 59.1 cm.) a pair (2) NOTES Originally from Bohemia, Hartmann began his career working for a nearby monastery, before becoming Court Painter to the Duke of Mansfeld in 1700. By 1702 he had moved to, and become a citizen of, Prague. There he was heavily influenced by the work of Jan Breughel I and Anton Mirou. Paintings by Hartmann were in the Imperial Collection, and those at Bamberg, Prague and Schleissheim.
