Biography from the Archives of askART: Hans Hartung was born in Leipzig and has lived much of his life on the edge of catastrophe, but with the unshakable belief in the transforming power of art. He drew incessantly as a child, and his fascination from the very beginning was with abstract forms. For many years Hartung was to experience all the solitude and hardships that an artist breaking new ground is traditionally believed to undergo. In Paris he countered lack of money and loneliness by copying at the Louvre and visiting the galleries. He married Anna-Eva Bergman, a Norwegian painter and they moved to the island of Minorca off Spain. As World War II neared, German residents became suspect and they had to leave, even though they had very strong anti-Nazi convictions. He joined the Foreign Legion and survived most of the war without serious accident. Then, in 1944, while attempting to rescue a comrade behind enemy lines, he was shot in the leg, and eventually, the leg had to be amputated. Largely ignored before the war, abstract artists increasingly occupied center stage in Paris in the 1950s. Hartung began to exhibit. Hans Hartung, one of the leading pioneers of Art Informel, regarded the line as the central element and foundation of his artistic language. At the core of his practice lies the line as the trace of an action. Hartung understood his painting not as spontaneous improvisation, but as a consciously controlled process in which the line represents a recorded movement. It is the result of a physical intervention and thus preserves the energy of that moment. At the same time, the line possesses a pronounced structural function. Unlike in American Abstract Expressionism, where the gesture is often interpreted as the immediate expression of subjective emotion, Hartung’s line is embedded within a compositional framework. During the 1960s, the line acquired an additional material dimension, as seen here in ‘T1963-U27’. Through the use of unconventional tools – such as a scraping instrument – the line was no longer merely applied, but emerged through the act of scratching into the paint layer itself. The line became an interface between surface and depth. The underlying sprayed gradation of blue, white and orange comes to light and erupts through the luminosity of complementary contrast against the black background. The repetition, clustering and overlapping of the line generate a visual dynamism and spatial depth that guide the eye through the painting. In this way, the line also carries a rhythmic and temporal quality reminiscent of natural phenomena such as growth, wind or radiating light, without depicting them directly. Hartung’s lines in this painting appear spontaneous and immediate, yet they are the result of a reflective artistic process. Die Linie ist für Hans Hartung, einen der führenden Wegbereiter des Informel, das zentrale Element und Fundament seiner künstlerischen Sprache. Im Zentrum steht dabei die Linie als Spur einer Handlung. Durch den Einsatz unkonventioneller Werkzeuge – wie etwa eines Kratzinstrumentes – wird sie nicht mehr nur aufgetragen, sondern entsteht durch den Eingriff des Kratzens in die Farbschicht selbst. Die Linie wird zur Schnittstelle zwischen Oberfläche und Tiefe. Der darunter liegende gesprayte Farbverlauf von Blau, Weiss und Orange tritt zu Tage und explodiert im Aufleuchten des Komplementärkontrastes auf dem schwarzen Hintergrund. Die Wiederholung, Bündelung und Überlagerung der Linie erzeugen eine visuelle Dynamik und Raumtiefe, die den Blick durch das Bild lenkt. Enclosed certifies that it was printed by the Il Cigno Printing House, Rome. Measurements: 34.5 x 24.5 cm (print); 49 x 35 cm (paper). Hans Hartung grew up in a family of artists, which led to his interest in art at an early age. He studied at the Academies of Dresden and Munich, where he had contact with masters of the stature of Nolde, and where he began an early stage close to the aesthetic guidelines of cubism. In 1926 he left his country, with the intention of leaving behind the pictorial localisms and opening up to other schools, which is why he decided to make a trip to Italy to finally settle in Paris. He made his individual debut in Dresden in 1931, but soon after he would be rejected by Nazi Germany for being considered a "degenerate" artist, in fact, in 1935 he was about to be arrested for trying to sell his work in Germany. During World War II, he became a member of the French legion, followed by the Gestapo, was arrested and locked in a red room with the intention of damaging his vision. From 1947 onwards, his fame in the French art scene grew. That same year he exhibited for the first time in Paris, and in 1960 he received the Grand International Prize at the Venice Biennale. He is currently represented at the MoMA in New York, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, the Tate Gallery in London and the Haifa Museum in Israel, among many other centers, institutions and collections around the world.
