  • Suzuki Harunobu, "Smoking Pipe," Figure Painting, Ukiyo-e
    Aug. 12, 2026

Suzuki Harunobu, "Smoking Pipe," Figure Painting, Ukiyo-e

    Est: $800 - $1,600

Title Suzuki Harunobu (Suzuki Harunobu) "Pipe" Figure Painting Ukiyo-e Bijin-ga Genre Painting Shunga Nishiki-e NHK Taiga Drama Berabou Featured Artist Japanese Painting Woodblock Print Painting Authenticity Guaranteed Description Work Explanation: Suzuki Harunobu was an ukiyo-e artist active in the mid-Edo period. He made significant contributions to the development of "nishiki-e," which uses multiple woodblocks to layer colors, and was widely popular for his bijin-ga, which depicted graceful beauties with slender figures and small, rounded faces. Despite depicting real-life scenes, Harunobu's works exude a dreamlike tranquility. "Pipe" is an adult ukiyo-e, known as shunga, depicting a man and woman spending time together in a room within the pleasure quarters. On a stack of three futons, a courtesan gently blows pipe smoke towards the guest's face. The man leans close to the woman, with his right hand inside her kimono, subtly revealing their intimate relationship. On the red futon, green, purple, and peach-colored kimonos overlap, creating a luxurious scene. Despite the bold content, the use of colors is soft, rendering the piece elegant and humorous. This work allows appreciation of the playful spirit of Edo adults and the soft colors unique to hand-printed woodblock prints. Artist Name: Suzuki Harunobu Work Title: Pipe Technique/ED: Woodblock Signature: Inscribed on the print Work Dimensions: Vertical 19cm × Horizontal 27cm (window size) Condition: Generally good Accessories/Remarks: Explanation document (including English translation) / Edo Heritage Large Nishiki Hand-Printed Woodblock Print Secret Collection of Beautiful Ukiyo-e Masterpieces Volume Four
