He had academic training at art schools in Europe, including the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. In the United States, he became fascinated with Native Americans of the Southwest and West, whom he painted for the rest of his life. In 1893 he traveled with the American artist Joseph Henry Sharp to Taos, New Mexico, and other areas of that and nearby states. He did so much work at the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota that he and his wife were adopted by the Lakota Sioux as members of their nation. john Hauser was born to German immigrants in Clifton, Ohio in 1858 (59) and died October 6, 1918 in Cincinnati, Ohio. After showing an early interest in drawing, he enrolled at the Ohio Mechanics' Institute to begin studying drawing. Hauser then moved to Cincinnati where he began his more formal art training at the Cincinnati Art Academy and later at the McMicken Art School. In 1880, John Hauser traveled to Munich to study at the Royal Academy of Art under Nicholas Gysis (1842-1901). Returning to Cincinnati, he would support himself by teaching art in the public schools. In 1885, Hauser returned to Germany to continue working under Gysis and others at Dusseldorf Academy. Like other American artist during this period, Hauser journeyed to Paris to study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.Hauser painted portraits of many of America's most famous Indian chiefs of the day. His legendary portraits included; Sitting Bull, Red Cloud, American Horse, Spotted Tail, High Horse and Lone Bear. The model for the Indian Head Nickel was a composite of two Hauser portraits; Chief Iron Tail, Sioux and Chief John Big Tree, Iroquois. Besides his small Indian portraits, Hauser painted large canvases of Indian hunters and village life, which were painted in his careful, realistic and authentic style. His work is in numerous Museums and Private Collections.

On his many trips to reservations throughout the West, he became an avid collector of native artifacts and clothing and utilized much of his collection in his paintings. Upon his death, his collection was donated to the Cincinnati Art Museum.Plains Indian with Rifle is a classic example of Hauser's style and subject matter. Like Farny, he frequently placed his subjects directly in front of the viewer set against a majestic western landscape. JOHN HAUSER AMERICAN, 1859-1913 SALUSO KIOWAS, 1892 Watercolor and gouache on grey wove paper: Lower left titled: Saluso Kiowas; lower right signed and dated: J. Hauser 92 Catalogue note: John Hauser is notable for the close relationships he maintained with the Indigenous people who were the subjects of his paintings. Born in Cleveland to German immigrants, Hauser studied painting at the Royal Academy in Munich before returning to Ohio and discovering his deep love for the American West. Starting in 1891, Hauser traveled extensively through Arizona, Colorado, Iowa, Nebraska, New Mexico and South Dakota, painting hundreds of portraits of Native Americans. He had a deep fascination and respect for the various cultures he encountered, and scholars at the National Museum of the American Indian have commended his work for its accuracy. In 1901, Hauser and his wife were adopted by the Sioux tribe, and Hauser was given an honorary name that translates to "Straight White Shield." The subject of this portrait is Saluso of the Kiowa tribe, indigenous to the Great Plains of the United States. According to historian Charles M. Robinson III, Saluso (also spelled Tsau Lau Te, meaning "Gray Goose" or "Cry of the Wild Goose") was the favorite son of Satana (circa 1820-1878), the famous Kiowa war chief. In Hauser's portrait, Saluso wears a hair pipe (elongated bead) breastplate, indicating his wealth and high status. Along with Saluso, Hauser painted many well-known Indigenous leaders, including Sitting Bull, Little Wound and Red Cloud.

BIOGRAPHY: Along with Henry Farny and Joseph Henry Sharp, John Hauser was one of three Cincinnati artists who became famous for their sensitive portraits of Native Americans. Hauser had extensive training in art schools in both America and Europe. He first traveled West in 1891, visiting Arizona and New Mexico. The trip began a lifelong fascination with Native American life and culture. While he painted American Indians, many of them notable chiefs, across the West, he became most closely associated with the Sioux. He was so highly respected by the Sioux that both he and his wife were welcomed as honorary members of the tribe in 1901.Hauser's paintings are noteworthy for their complete authenticity in terms of clothing and other details of everyday Native American life. Viewers of this painting and collectors of Hauser's work can always be assured that he was painstakingly accurate in depicting the setting, the clothing, and the possessions of his subjects. Today, his many paintings of American Indians are both a testament to his artistic skill and a visual history of 19th century Native American life.
