        Est: £2,000 - £3,000

SCOTT, Sir Walter (1771-1832)-- Benjamin Robert HAYDON (1786-1846). Portrait of Sir Walter Scott in black and white chalk, lips touched with red chalk, on oatmeal paper, 200 x 152mm, framed and glazed. Provenance. Rev. William Aldwin Soames (his sale, Foster, 14 March 1866, lot 140); possibly F.S. Child, 1932; the Hon. Christopher Lennox-Boyd, his anon. sale, Christie's, 5 November 1974 (lot 111), bt Austen, 30 gns; private collection. Listed by Francis Russell, Portraits of Sir Walter Scott: a study of romantic portraiture (1987), no.82, who notes the accounts by both Scott ('Breakfasted with Haydon and sate for my head') and Haydon for the sitting on 5 May 1828. Haydon's is more circumstantial: 'Sir Walter came to breakfast... He sat to me afterwards for an hour and 1/2, and a delightful sitting it was. i hit his expression exactly. Sir Walter Scott seemed depressed... [he] has certainly the most penetrating look I ever saw, except in Shakespeare's portraits'. Haydon still had the portrait in 1832, when he offered it to Lord Francis Egerton.

A sleeping dog oil on canvas 101/2 x 121/2 in. (26.8 x 31.9 cm.) PROVENANCE with P. & D. Conalghi & Co., Ltd., London. Possibly the artist's studio sale; Christie's, 8-15 May 1874, lot 207 as 'Dog lying down'. EXHIBITION Philadelphia, Philadelphia Museum of Art, lent by Mrs John Wintersteen, 1963. NOTES The present picture appears to be a very early work by the artist, painted circa 1818 when Landseer was only 15 or 16 years old. As a boy, Landseer was fond of drawing animals and entered the Royal Academy Schools at the age of 14. Encouraged by Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846), Landseer studied dissection and anatomy to perfect his knowledge of animals. Mrs Bunny Wintersteen was the sister of Sir Henry McIlhenny of Philadelphia, who had a large house and estate in Ireland which he filled with works by Landseer.

      • George Henry Harlow (1787-1819)
        Nov. 21, 2002

        George Henry Harlow (1787-1819)

        Est: $3,100 - $4,650

Portrait of Benjamin Robert Haydon (1786-1846), bust-length signed 'G.H.H.' (lower right) and inscribed and dated 'B.R.Haydon/1815' (lower left) pencil and red chalk 9 7/8 x 8 in. (24.7 x 20.3 cm.) PROVENANCE with Colnaghi's, London. NOTES This sensitive drawing shows Harlow's debt to Sir Thomas Lawrence, his one-time tutor, who permitted the younger artist to copy and occasionally assist him in his work. A rift led to Harlow establishing himself independently, though he concentrated on portraiture, often depicting members of artistic or theatrical coteries. Benjamin Robert Haydon is the archetypal Romantic figure: an aspirational history painter who yet rankled the establishment and never secured the approbation of the buying public. Following his failure to win any of the Westminster Hall decoration schemes, and a disastrous solo exhibition held at the Egyptian Hall, Piccadilly, in 1846, Haydon committed suicide in June of the same year. His published diaries testify to the vital originality of a man who befriended Keats and Wordsworth, and tackled his critics in scathing pamphlets.
