Edwin Hayes (1819/20 - 1904) Watercolor on paper, Signed Lower Right, Measures (8 x 11 inches) w/frame (14 x 16.5 inches) The Irish watercolourist and marine painter Edwin Hayes was born in Bristol but grew up in Dublin. He studied drawing and painting at the Dublin Society Art School and set his sights on becoming a marine painter, an ambition nurtured and encouraged by living close to Dublin's docks and quays, as well as his personal experience as a trans-Atlantic steward boy and sailor. As a marine artist, he is comparable with his contemporaries like the naval painter, Richard Brydges Beechey HRHA (1808-1895), George Mounsey Atkinson (1806-1884), and the later San Francisco-based painter William Coulter (1849-1936). Hayes first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy* (RHA) in 1842, at the age of 22, after which he remained painting in Dublin over the next ten years. Then, in 1852, he went to London to paint under the scene artist Telbin. In 1854, Hayes exhibited View of the River Liffey and the Custom House

Edwin Hayes (1819 - 1904) French Fishing Boats Oil on canvas, 76 x 127cm (30 x 50) Signed Edwin Hayes remains one of the most illustrious of Ireland’s maritime painters. Hayes may have been born in Bristol, but it was in Dublin that his ability blossomed. Hayes enjoyed a long career which saw his works frequently exhibited in both the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal Academy from the mid-19th century. Hayes worked on transatlantic vessels and also enjoyed to sail in his spare time. This time spent at sea gave Hayes a deep understanding of the subject and gave him his gift for handling marine subjects. Hayes was famed for his seascapes of the Channel and the Irish Sea. In this composition we see French fishing vessels navigating the stormy seas. The piece focuses on the crew of a single lugger who skilfully steer clear of a rocky outcrop. The narrative of the piece creates a nervous excitement within the viewer as they fear for the safety of the crew. The life buoy in the left middle ground highlights that the crew are perilously close to the danger of the rocks. The rocks serve as a reminder of the dangers these fleets faced daily. The life buoy adds tension to the piece as the onlooker momentarily dreads that a member of the crew has fallen overboard. The white clouds are mirrored by the white capped waves crashing against the coast. The serene sky above the sailors contrasts to the incoming dark clouds that have begun to roll across the mainland. The movement of the fishing boat is mirrored by the flight of the gull that glides across the foreground with its attentively detailed black tipped wings. The tower and ruins on the headland create an elegant backdrop to the coastal scene. Daragh Geraghty-Singleton, August 2022

Edwin Hayes RHA RI (1820-1904) Holy Island, Isle of Arran (1862)

        Est: €6,000 - €9,000

Edwin Hayes RHA RI (1820-1904) Holy Island, Isle of Arran (1862) oil on canvas signed lower left and dated 1862 h:39.50  w:137 cm. Provenance: Private Collection A variety of vessels are depicted in this dramatic panoramic view of Lamlash Bay on the island of Arran, off the west coast of Scotland. The painting depicts the aftermath of a storm, with flotsam and jetsam strewn along the shoreline. In the right foreground, braving the waves, fishermen in a rowing boat struggle to pull in nets and lobster pots. Behind, a fishing boat, larboards raised and sails shortened, makes for the shore. To the left, on a storm-battered pier, a fisherman loads nets onto a horse-drawn cart. Beached nearby, a fishing boat is being repaired. Further out to sea, two battleships ride at anchor, while further sailing vessels are visible in the distance. In the background can be seen Holy Isle, with its peak, Mullach Mór, shrouded in clouds. The scene depicted by Hayes in 1862 has changed relatively little over the years. The pier is now a solid, stone-built affair, the town has developed and the shoreline has been neatened up. In contrast with Hayes's depiction of marine detritus, nets and lobster pots, Lamlash Bay is today a protected marine environment, where fishing is prohibited. The view of Holy Isle remains unchanged. In early medieval times, the Isle provided a refuge for the Irish hermit St. Molaise, and for centuries bore the name 'Ealain Molaise'. At the time Hayes was working, there was considerable interest in the saint, and Margaret Stokes's article on the Gospel of St. Molaise was published in 1871. Over the past three decades, the Isle, now owned by the Samyé Ling Buddhist Community, has served as a retreat centre. Although born in Bristol in 1819, Edwin Hayes grew up in Dublin, and while still in his teens, enrolled at the Dublin Society Drawing Schools. Many of the customers in the tavern run by his father, close to the Liffey quays, would have been seamen, and this may have influenced Hayes to become a marine painter. A keen yachtsman, he had a sail boat in which he explored Dublin Bay and the Irish Sea, venturing as far as West Cork. Hayes exhibited at the RHA from 1842 onwards, was elected ARHA in 1853 and a full member eighteen years later. In 1853, his Emigrant Ship, Dublin Bay (National Gallery of Ireland) was shown at the Royal Hibernian Academy. That same year he moved to London, where he worked as a theatre scene painter, exhibited at the Royal Academy and travelled extensively in England and the Netherlands, while continuing to send works to Dublin. His Sunset at Sea, a view at Harlyn Bay, Cornwall, exhibited at the RA in 1894, is now in Tate Britain. In 1860 Hayes was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours, becoming a full member three years later. He also showed regularly with the New Watercolour Society and the British Institution. At the peak of his career, his paintings were highly popular, and were regularly reproduced as engravings and lithographs. The Queen's Departure from Kingstown Harbour, August 10th. 1849 (1851), shown at the RHA in 1850, was lithographed by J. Needham. His Hoveller Boat, off Dalkey was reproduced in the Illustrated News of the World in 1858. Peter Murray, March 2022

Edwin Hayes RHA RI ROI (1819-1904) Dalkey Sound Oil on canvas, 26 x 35cm (10¼ x 13¾'') Signed Edwin Hayes was born in Bristol in 1820 but brought up in Dublin where his father ran the Bristol and Glasgow Hotel in Marlborough Street. He studied at the Dublin Society’s Schools and from the very first his ambition was to be a marine painter. His experiences as a pleasure sailor on the Irish Sea and also as a hand on a trans-Atlantic vessel stood him in good stead in his future art, as Walter Strickland noted his experiences enabled him in his pictures to delineate the sea and shipping with a sincerity and truth born of experience. Hayes first exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1842 and continued to exhibit there until his death in 1904, showing hundreds of paintings over that period. He remained in Dublin for ten years before moving to London. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy of Arts, British Institution, Society of British Artists and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours, becoming a full member of the latter in 1863. A hugely prolific but accomplished artist, Hayes painted the shores and harbours of the Irish and British coasts, and his visits to the coasts of France, Spain and Italy yielded him many subjects, but his views around the east coast of Ireland are particularly acclaimed. The present work depicts a variety of sailing vessels in Dalkey Sound in quite challenging seas. Dalkey Sound is the stretch of water between Dalkey Island and the coast at Dalkey which is on the southern point of the entrance to Dublin Bay and just a couple of miles southeast of Dun Laoghaire Harbour. Hayes has managed to capture the drama of the storm ravaged seas, the churning surf and the ships endeavouring to get to safety. The contrast between the rain filled clouds and grey seas to the east and the brightening skies to the west coupled with the light being caught in the wind-filled sails of the fishing boat is masterful and conveys to the viewer the impending end of the storm. We still however remain concerned for the safety of the fishermen in their all-weather attire on the deck struggling to keep control and get to the safety of Coliemore or Bullock Harbour.
