Frank Jay Haynes (October 28, 1853 – March 10, 1921), known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all that knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs, the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. He became both the official photographer of the Northern Pacific Railway and of Yellowstone National Park as well as operating early transportation concessions in the park. His photographs were widely published in articles, journals, books and turned into stereographs and postcards in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Moorhead, MN. 6 x 3 5/8 in. stereoview on cardstock mount (even toning, light spotting/staining, loss to lower right edge of left print; soiling, edge and corner wear to mount). Recto with F. Jay Haynes' imprint, verso with Haynes' "Scenery Along the Line of the Northern Pacific Rail Road" imprint with the title and image number accomplished in manuscript: "N.P. Observation Car" and "31" respectively. A view of wealthy hunters Henry Houghton & Jerome Marble from Massachusetts posed before a "Hunting-Observation" car of their own design, with women and children from the expedition standing on the platform. HindmanFeatured in this lot is this advertisement showing that the Montana Historical Society is opening a new exhibit on F. Jay Haynes (1853-1921), a Minnesota born photographer. Frank Jay Haynes, known as F. Jay or the Professor to almost all who knew him, was a professional photographer, publisher, and entrepreneur from Minnesota who played a major role in documenting through photographs the settlement and early history of the great Northwest. The advertisement shows a photo of F. J. Haynes front and center, next to a river, standing with his camera. The top of the ad reads, "Haynes" in blue lettering. The bottom reads, "F. J. Haynes / 1853-1921 / Photographer / A New Exhibition at the Montana Historical Society". The ad shows good condition with no signs of obvious damage and slight wear present to the top left of the ad. The ad measures 23 7/8" L x 17 7/8" W.

A three-quarters studio portrait of Curley, a scout to George Custer and survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn. The Crow scout was the first to report on the 7th Cavalry's defeat. He wears his hair in two braids with feathers, earrngs, a bandana wrapped around his neck with a slide, and a blanket wrapped around his shoulders.
