William Jacob Hays, Sr. American, 1830-1875 Pheasants, 1867

    Est: $3,000 - $5,000

William Jacob Hays, Sr. American, 1830-1875 Pheasants, 1867 Signed W. J. Hays and dated 1867. (ll) Oil on canvas stretched to a panel 19 x 24 inches Provenance: Private collection In contrast to many of his contemporaries who painted majestic views of the Hudson River Valley and New England, Hays focused his attention on the portrayal of animals and the Western prairies. He achieved considerable success in this field, and at the time of his death, he was known as "one of the most able painters in the country." (Art Journal, New York, 1875, 127). Five years later, the art historian S. G. W. Benjamin declared that Hays "succeeded in giving spirit and character to the [animals] he painted, and holds among our animal painters a position not dissimilar to that of [William Sidney] Mount in genre." Interested in animal subjects from the outset of his career, Hays-possibly inspired by the example of George Catlin-traveled for five months along the upper Missouri River to Fort Union. He rendered crisp oil paintings on his return from the drawings he created on the trip. Hays subsequently traveled to the Adirondacks, Nova Scotia, Yellowstone in Wyoming, and England, developing detailed studies for his acclaimed views of herds of buffalo and prairie life, as well as of game birds, fish, fruit, and flowers. Dec. 03, 2002

Another owner WILLIAM JACOB HAYS (1830-1875) Dakota Badlands, 1860 signed "W.J. Hays" (lower left)

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

inscribed "Dakota Badlands, 1860" (on reverse) oil and pencil on artist's board 13 3/4 x 24 1/2 in. (35 x 62.2 cm) Provenance Private Collection, Long Island, NY A resident of the famous 10th Street Studio and a friend and correspondent of Church, Heade, and Kensett, William Jacob Hays was the best known of America's mid-19th century animal painters. Although he also painted domestic pets and orchids, Hays gained his greatest reknown for his depictions of American wildlife, most notably the bison, elk, deer and antelope of the Western prairies. The key event in his career was his five-month trip up the Missouri River in 1860, which took him to the Dakotas, Montana, and Yellowstone. This is the only known landscape that he painted during that tour. In its plein-air immediacy of observation, it not only captures the surreal topography of the Dakota Badlands, but also the brilliance of Western light. We are grateful to Dr. Bruce Chambers for cataloguing this lot.
