– Sehr gutes Exemplar.

    John Heartfield, Niemals wieder!, 1930-32/1959

    Est: €2,500 - €3,000

The motif of the dove of peace on a bayonet was originally published as a collage with the text "Der Sinn von Genf. Wo das Kapital lebt, kann der Friede nicht leben!" as the cover of the socialist AIZ (Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung, Vol. 11, 1932, issue 48). In 1939 it was used once again as the cover of the British magazine 'Direction' (Vol. 2, 1939, issue 8) under the heading 'Exiled German Writers'. The version presented here, with the anti-war formula "Never again!" is a poster design from 1959, based on a painted-over version from 1941, which Heartfield had designed on the occasion of the German invasion of Russia. Heartfield had returned to Germany from his exile in Britain in 1950, where he lived in the GDR. After his political rehabilitation, he was able to work as a designer, thanks to the support of Bertold Brecht et al., and received artistic recognition.
