Suite 4 Mary Heilmann Pace Editions Prints 1990

    Est: $2,000 - $4,000

Mary Heilmann (American, b. 1940). Suite of four etching and aquatints on handmade paper. Published by Pace Editions, 1990. Titled "Untitled: Cut, Touch, Kiss, Valentine." Pencil signed, dated, and numbered from an edition of 30 along the verso. Provenance: Distinguished Corporate Collection. Lot Essay: Mary Heilmann is a highly influential American painter whose work spans a variety of mediums, including ceramics and furniture design. Based in New York City and Bridgehampton, She has had solo exhibitions at prestigious galleries such as 303 Gallery and Hauser & Wirth, and her works are held in major museums nationwide. Throughout her career, she has had a profound impact on younger generations of artists, especially women, who cite her as a key influence in the evolution of contemporary painting. Heilmann's style is known for its spontaneous use of color, geometric abstraction, and casual yet innovative techniques, often combining humor and irony with deep emotional and conceptual undercurrents. Heilmann's importance in the art world can be attributed to her ability to break free from dominant art movements of her time, such as Color Field painting, and instead develop a unique, "anti-aesthetic" approach that placed emphasis on the materials and forms of painting itself. Over the years, she expanded her practice to include ceramics and furniture, reimagining these forms as integrated elements of her artistic world. Heilmann's work, characterized by its vibrant colors, biomorphic shapes, and personal narrative, has become a touchstone for artists seeking to challenge traditional boundaries and embrace postmodern sensibilities.

Heilmann, Mary (b. 1940) All Night Movie, Signed Print.

    Est: $800 - $1,200

Heilmann, Mary (b. 1940) All Night Movie, Signed Print. New York: Pace, 1991. Aquatint on handmade paper; heavy black paper with deckle edges printed in black; two squares that converge on one quarter, signed on verso in pencil, one of five printer's proofs; 20 1/4 x 20 1/4 in. [Together with] Heilmann's The All Night Movie, Brooklyn: Primary Information, 1999, first edition, softcover, signed by the artist, 12 x 9 in. "Mary Heilmann grew up primarily in San Francisco, where the Beats exercised an early influence on her sensibility. After studying poetry and literature, she earned a master's degree in ceramics and sculpture from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1967. Moving to New York the following year, Heilmann found herself doubly isolated, as a woman and a West Coaster, which led her to stubbornly embrace painting despite the relative marginality of the medium by the end of the decade. [...] In 1986 she became the only woman represented by the Pat Hearn Gallery, the center of the East Village art scene at the time. It was her 1990 survey at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, however, that raised her profile beyond a dedicated circle of artist admirers." (Quoted from Jenevive Nykolak's biographical sketch of Heilmann from the National Gallery of Art website, one of the Outliers and American Vanguard Artist Biographies.
