b. 1915 - d. 2009

Otto Heino (April 20, 1915 – July 16, 2009) artists working in ceramics. One of twelve children born of Finnish immigrants, Lena and August Heino, in East Hampton, Connecticut, United States. His family ran a dairy farm in quiet farm country. Otto Heino's involvement with ceramics began while serving in the U.S. Air Force in England; during a military leave, he spent several days watching Bernard Leach throw pots. Following his return to the US, he used his GI Bill funding in 1949 to study ceramics at the League of New Hampshire Arts and Crafts, in Concord, New Hampshire. There he met Vivika, his teacher, whom he was married to in 1950.

    Vivika Heino (American, 1910-1995); Otto Heino (American, 1915-2009), ca. 1960s CE. A footed pedestal bowl by Vivika and Otto Heino, glazed in warm amber and russet tones, the wheel-thrown form enlivened by fine horizontal throwing lines and a speckled iron-rich glaze. A band of lively textured relief encircles the waist where bowl meets pedestal, adding tactile interest. Signed in black on the interior of the pedestal foot - a dating detail consistent with the Heinos' early 1960s practice. Size: 8" D x 7" H (20.3 cm D x 17.8 cm H) Vivika (1910-1995) and Otto Heino (1915-2009) were defining figures of the American Studio Pottery movement. They married in 1950, and henceforth all work from their studio, no matter who made it, was signed by both. Their work earned a Silver Medal at the International Ceramics Exhibition in Ostend, Belgium in 1959, and a Gold Medal at the Biennale Internationale de Céramique d'Art in Vallauris, France in 1978, and has been exhibited at the Smithsonian Institution, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the de Young Museum in San Francisco, the American Craft Museum in New York, the Picasso Museum in Vallauris, and the Mingei Museum in San Diego, among others. Their pots are prized for their unpretentious strength, masterful glazes, and the deeply human quality that comes from a lifetime shared at the wheel.
