Hamilton - 3 Engravings of a Painting from a Grecian Vase

This hand-colored engraving is from Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein after Sir William Hamilton's collection of vases. The full title reads Recueil de Gravures d'après les Vases Antiques or Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases... The work was published in Naples in 1791. This is Tischbein's famous work on Sir William Hamilton's second and greatest collection of antique vases. His first had been sold to the British Museum in 1772, the second nearly did not make it to Britain (about a third were lost in a shipwreck), but the collection was eventually brought by Thomas Hope, one of the great champions of the neo-classical style. The present image is both a technically brilliant record of a priceless object and a highly-pleasing graphic image that has as much appeal today as when it was produced in Florence two hundred years ago. Sir William Hamilton was the British ambassador to Naples from 1764 to 1800, during the city's golden age. An avid antiquarian, Hamilton assembled one of the world's finest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. In addition to his duties as ambassador, Hamilton was also renowned as a knowledgeable guide and congenial host to the visiting English 'Grand Tourists'. With infectious enthusiasm he would extol the wonders of Naples and the beauties of arts of the ancient world, inspiring in many of his aristocratic visitors a genuine love of the antique. This new-found enthusiasm found its expression in the new style of neo-classicism and in the collections of antiquites which found their way to many of the stately homes of England.

West in London and was sponsored by George III. After returning from his three-year stay in Italy in 1793, he was appointed Royal Court and Cabinet Painter in Hanover. Ramberg's true talent lay in drawing improvisation, where his lively sense of humor and satire could express itself most uninhibitedly. After Chodowiecki's death, Ramberg was the most sought-after illustrator in Germany.

Lambert began working on aspects of refraction through the atmosphere in 1752, and from 1754 this work was carried out in parallel with his work on photometry. The book is divided into three parts: 'Les propriétés générales de la route, qui la lumière prend, en passant par des milieux réfringens, sphériques et concentriques'; 'Des réfractions astronomiques, de la manière de les déterminer par approximation aussi exactement que l'on voudra, et de leur rapport à divers autres problèmes'; and 'Des réfractions circulaires, de leur usage pour la détermination des réfractions terrestres: et de divers autres problèmes dépendant des réfractions tant astronomiques que terrestres'. Remarkably, during the entire period 1756-58 Lambert was traveling through northern Europe and so carried with him a small library. Lambert mentions that he is working on another work in optics and promises to publish it soon -this would eventually be his Photometria. First published in 1758 by H. Scheurleer, the present volume is the second issue published in 1759 by Nicolaas van Daalen. Library Hub lists only one copy of the 1758 first edition.

After his ten-year wandering as a result of the Trojan War, King Odysseus of Ithaca returns to his old homeland. However, his wife Penelope initially does not recognise him, since he was turned into a beggar by the goddess Athena in order to investigate the situation at his court without being identified. The present scene depicts the encounter between Odysseus, dressed as a beggar, and his wife. The young soldier between them is their son Telemachus, to whom Odysseus had previously revealed himself and who now mediates between the spouses. Behind Penelope stands the old maid Eurycleia, who was the only one to recognise Odysseus initially - apart from his old dog.

We would like to thank Dr. Petra Tiegel-Hertfelder, Bonn, for confirming the authenticity of this work after examining the original and determining the subject of the picture to be a motif from Homer's “Odyssey”. This epic describes the ten-year wanderings of King Odysseus of Ithaca after the Trojan War. The present scene describes Odysseus's farewell to the nymph Calypso, who held the hero on her island of Ogygia for seven years after a shipwreck and only let him go again at the behest of the gods. Even though Odysseus wanted to return to his homeland of Ithaca and to his wife Penelope, he still entered into a love affair with Calypso, which explains the heartfelt farewell in Tischbein's painting. The work is housed in a richly carved contemporary frame reminiscent of those of Johann August Nahl (1710-1785), with whom Tischbein was befriended.

(Haina 1722–1789 Kassel) A portrait of a lady dressed in blue and fur, oil in canvas, 62.5 x 52 cm, framed We are grateful to Anna-Charlotte Flohr for confirming the attribution. Her extensive written report accompanies the present lot. This elegant portrait of a young woman, depicted half-length and attired in a luminous blue velvet pelerine, edged with soft grey fur, is a newly rediscovered work by Johann Heinrich Tischbein the Elder, known as the Kasseler Tischbein. The artist’s command of texture is evident in the subtle rendering of shimmering satin, fine lace, and the soft density of velvet and fur. This interplay of material richness and painterly delicacy reveals Tischbein’s sensitivity to the conventions of court portraiture, filtered through the artistic lessons he absorbed in Paris under Charles van Loo, and in Venice and Rome during his formative Italian sojourn between 1748 and 1751. Although the sitter’s identity remains unknown, her age – around twenty-five years – together with the refinement of her features and costume, suggests a lady of noble or patrician background within the Kassel courtly milieu. Tischbein’s patrons, Landgrave Wilhelm VIII and his successor Landgrave Frederick II and the cultivated circle of Hessian nobility, valued portraits such as this, both as likenesses and as affirmations of status, grace, and cultivation. The painting exemplifies Tischbein at his best: the characteristic liveliness of expression, the subtle atmospheric tonality, and the artist’s mastery of fabric and flesh. Anna-Charlotte Flohr, who examined the work in the original, has confirmed its authenticity and placed it firmly within the mature Kassel period of Tischbein’s career, dating it to the late 1750’s or early 1760’s. At this time, Tischbein had established himself as court painter to Landgrave Wilhelm VIII (appointed 1753) and was simultaneously forging a reputation for refined portraiture, informed by the French and Italian models he studied abroad, yet unmistakably individualised by his own hand. Formerly in a private collection, the work has remained unpublished until its recent rediscovery. Its emergence adds significantly to the known corpus of Tischbein’s portraits of women, which often oscillate between courtly grandeur and an intimate, almost private tenderness. Tischbein is the author of important history paintings yet today is primarily known for his courtly and elegant portraits.

La tela, di sicuro tema iconografico shakespeariano, presenta, sia per i caratteri stilistici che per la tipologia stessa delle figure, i modi tipici del grande pittore svizzero. Claudio Strinati, nell'expertise relativa a quest'opera redatta il 2 Dicembre 1996, riconosce infatti la piena paternità a Füssli: l'assetto complessivo della composizione e la teatralità dell'opera, non lascerebbero a suo parere alcun dubbio sull'attribuzione. Più controversa risulterebbe la datazione: secondo lo studioso il rapporto stilistico più probante sarebbe con le opere di Füssli del nono decennio, portando come confronto il "Sogno della Regina Caterina" del 1781 e le prime composizioni in cui il Maestro farà uso accentuato del bitume, come "Carattaco di fronte all'Imperatore Claudio", entrambe con una forte affinità con la Morte di Cordelia qui presentato. L'atteggiamento romantico dei personaggi e la teatralità della composizione, come il raggio di luce che si concentra sul corpo della donna esanime al pari di un moderno occhio di bue, ci rende primi spettatori della scena, proprio come se si trattasse di un dramma rappresentato sul palcoscenico di un teatro.La mano del Maestro, da sempre fortemente attratto dalla rappresentazione di temi shakespeariani, trova forte riscontro nella tipologia dei personaggi e nella composizione complessiva, mentre il tratto potrebbe apparire forse più morbido e sofisticato rispetto ad altre opere di sicura attribuzione füssliniana. Johann Heinrich Meyer (1760 Stäfa bei Zürich-1832 Jena) war ein Schweizer Maler und Kunstschriftsteller. Der Füssli-Schüler ging 1784 nach Rom, wurde 1787 Goethes Freund, lebte ab 1791 in Weimar, wirkte dort ab 1806 als Direktor der Fürstlichen Zeichenschule und war Goethes rechte Hand in Kunstangelegenheiten. Die Radierungen in gratigen Abzügen mit deutlich zeichnender Plattenkante. - Nur selten minimal fleckig, bzw. mit Läsuren. Gutes Exemplar. The etchings show mountains, landscapes, bucolic scenes in Toggenburg, waterfall in Oberhasle, Italian Switzerland, Limat, Valais, Andelfingen, Glanerland, Thur, Sihlwald. Johann Heinrich Meyer (1760 Stäfa near Zurich-1832 Jena) was a Swiss painter and art writer. The Füssli pupil went to Rome in 1784, became Goethe's friend in 1787, lived in Weimar from 1791, worked there from 1806 as director of the Princely School of Drawing and was Goethe's right-hand man in matters of art. The etchings in burnished impressions with clearly marked platemark. - Only rarely minimally stained or with losses. A good copy.

The foreground is dominated by a back figure of a man, emphasised by the light, who grabs a fleeing woman in a dark robe by the hair in order to kill her with his sword. To his right, dead women in yellow and red skirts lie on the ground. The massacre of figures in the background is sketchily rendered in shades of grey with only a few muted colour accents. This hand-colored engraving is from Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Tischbein after Sir William Hamilton's collection of vases. The full title reads Recueil de Gravures d'après les Vases Antiques or Collection of Engravings from Ancient Vases... The work was published in Naples in 1791. This is Tischbein's famous work on Sir William Hamilton's second and greatest collection of antique vases. His first had been sold to the British Museum in 1772, the second nearly did not make it to Britain (about a third were lost in a shipwreck), but the collection was eventually brought by Thomas Hope, one of the great champions of the neo-classical style. The present image is both a technically brilliant record of a priceless object and a highly-pleasing graphic image that has as much appeal today as when it was produced in Florence two hundred years ago. Sir William Hamilton was the British ambassador to Naples from 1764 to 1800, during the city's golden age. An avid antiquarian, Hamilton assembled one of the world's finest collections of Greek and Roman antiquities. In addition to his duties as ambassador, Hamilton was also renowned as a knowledgeable guide and congenial host to the visiting English 'Grand Tourists'. With infectious enthusiasm he would extol the wonders of Naples and the beauties of arts of the ancient world, inspiring in many of his aristocratic visitors a genuine love of the antique.
