Paul Helleu Sold at Auction Prices

Früchtemaler, Painter, Porträtmaler, Pastel Artist, Etcher, Flower painter, Landscape painter, Engraver, b. 1859 - d. 1927

Paul César Helleu (17 December 1859 – 23 March 1927) was a French oil painter, pastel artist, drypoint etcher, and designer, best known for his numerous portraits of beautiful society women of the Belle Époque. He also conceived the ceiling mural of night sky constellations for Grand Central Terminal in New York City. He was also the father of Jean Helleu and the grandfather of Jacques Helleu, both artistic directors for Parfums Chanel.

Like many prominent French artists, Helleu studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. This was one of the foremost centres for art training in Europe, and Helleu’s education would equip him with a thorough understanding of figure and composition. These skills that would become extremely useful as Helleu became swept up in the decadence and exuberance of the Belle Epoque.

Helleu also produced a small array of works other than portraiture, including landscapes and still life. Interestingly, he is also to thank for the stunning celestial zodiac chart decorating the main hall of Grand Central Station in New York City. Helleu worked with the architect Witney Warren to produce the design, and it is reflective of the opulence of the Belle Epoque, translated for an American audience.

It was not until the dawning of the First World War that the glories of the Belle Epoque fell away, replaced with the desolation and fear of conflict. Helleu never saw the same success, although his place in history had already been sealed in oil, pastel, and dry point. He was awarded the Légion d’honneur in 1904, the highest order of merit in France. Helleu was a master of beauty and captured the burgeoning life of the Belle Epoque in every brushstroke and careful mark.

    Est: $1,000 - $1,500

Paul Cesar Helleu French, (1859-1927) Portrait of a Woman With Hat etching pencil signed lower left. Biography from Newman Galleries: French painter and engraver, Paul-Cesar Helleu was born in Vannes on December 17, 1859. After working with ceramics and engraving, Helleu decided to study painting. He began his training with Jean-Leon Gerome at the National School of Fine Arts. Helleu's first subjects were old churches, gothic naves, and stained glass windows. He later painted landscapes and scenes of Versailles. Yet it was his early 20th Century views of Parisian society that established Helleu's reputation. His worldly effigies, female silhouettes, and sportive scenes of the elegant class, are among the most precise images of the "belle époque." His refined style is evident in his etchings and drypoints, as well as his canvases. Helleu was a member of the National Society of Fine Arts beginning in 1893. He was also an honorary member of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters, and Engravers in London; and after 1904, he was decorated for the Legion of Honor. Helleu's works are part of collections of the Boston Museum, the Louvre, and the Luxembourg Museum. Paul-Cesar Helleu died in Paris on March 23, 1927.

PAUL CÉSAR HELLEU (Vannes, 1859 – Paris, 1927) - Elegant young woman on the Bird Bridge (c. 1900)

    Est: €250,000 - €300,000

Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 81.3 x 60 cm. Signed lower left “Helleu”. Framed in profile. A refined and luminous scene depicting an elegantly dressed young woman on the deck of the Bird, the artist's sailing ship, around 1900. The figure, captured with naturalness and distinction, embodies the feminine ideal that made Helleu one of the great portraitists of the Belle Époque. The sea breeze suggests movement in the clothing, while the open atmosphere of the sea lends freshness and modernity to the composition. Helleu was one of the most admired painters and printmakers of his time, celebrated especially for his female portraits and his masterful drypoint etchings. A friend of James Abbott McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, and Claude Monet, he masterfully integrated into his style the linear elegance and luminous sensitivity characteristic of the fin de siècle. He initially painted portraits of his wife, Alice Guérin (1869–1921), his favorite model, but soon established himself as the fashionable portraitist of Parisian high society. His fascination with the sea and sailing profoundly influenced his work: a passionate sailor, he spent long periods aboard his vessel, finding inspiration both in the seascape and in the sophisticated silhouettes of the women around him. His style, characterized by graceful lines, understated elegance, and the exaltation of femininity, was widely appreciated in Paris, London, and New York, a city he began to visit frequently from 1902 onward. In addition to his paintings, he distinguished himself as one of the great masters of drypoint, a medium in which he achieved a remarkable international reputation. Provenance: Christie's, November 25, 1988, lot 76. Private collection, Paris. Note: Les Amis de Paul-César Helleu, catalogue raisonné number APCH HU2-1560. Bibliography: F.
