Martin Hennings PROVENANCE: Elizabeth Rould, Woodbury, Minnesota; Estate of the above. Born in New Jersey and raised in Chicago by German immigrant parents, Ernest Hennings trained at both the Art Institute of Chicago and the Munich Academy. In 1915, Hennings began work as a commercial artist and muralist. During this period he painted with thick, broad brush strokes and favored the darkened palette of the Munich School. But it was the artist's experience of Taos, New Mexico that would prove the pivotal influence in his work, ultimately solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest painters of the American west. Like his close friends Victor Higgins and Walter Ufer, Hennings came to Taos by way of the patronage of Chicago's former mayor and art collector Carter H. Harrison, Jr. In 1924, Hennings joined the Taos Society of Artists and quickly developed his signature painting style: colorful, patterned scenes of sensitively rendered Pueblo Indians communing with nature. Aspen forests were Hennings' preferred setting for these tapestry-like paintings, in which Indians on horseback interlace with delicately-rendered trees, seemingly woven into the natural fabric of woodlands. Hennings believed that man could best find wholeness and serenity in nature, and thus became known for his expressive depictions of riders on horseback navigating the countryside. In Open Clearing, Hennings invites the viewer to become the explorer of this quiet landscape. In the distance, cumulus clouds mimic the shape of the distant trees, unifying the sky and the land, and creating the sense of a vast and expansive panorama. Hennings was truly a master at weaving together the landscape and figural elements of his compositions, thus achieving the ultimate union of man and nature. HID01801242017

Featured in this lot is this original oil painting of "Sagebrush and Billowing Clouds," from Ernest Martin Henings born 1886 and passed in 1956. The oil on board painting features a vibrant scene of sagebrush of different shades of light to dark green on the red clay ground with billowing clouds in the sky. The artist signature can be seen in the bottom right hand corner. E. Martin Hennings was born in Penns Grove, New Jersey to German immigrant parents. Two years after he was born, Hennings' father moved his family to Chicago. It was in 1901 that Hennings began taking classes at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, which was largely based on the great European art schools and made particularly emphasis on the importance of drawing. On June 17, 1904, he graduated from the school with honors, but continued to study there for another two years, mostly under the instruction of John Vanderpoel. By the 1920s, Ernest Hennings was a established painter was building his reputation on the national scene, with exhibitions and awards including: the Walter Lippincott Prize at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the lsidor Medal and the Ranger Fund Purchase prizes at the National Academy of Design in New York, the Harry Frank Prize from the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery of Art. The condition of this oil on board painting is good with no obvious signs of damage and in good overall condition. The measurements of this framed oil on board are 16 1/4" x 14" and the visible art measures 7 1/2" x 5 1/4". Artwork from this artist most recently sold for $740,000.00 from Bonhams Auction on Aug 04, 2012. Provenance: From the renowned Sundog Fine Art Bozeman, Montana collection and collected by Bruce VanLandingham. Bruce VanLandingham was a pillar in the American Indian collecting community and a respected expert. Along with being an avid collector, Bruce also was the sole owner of Sundog Fine Art Gallery in Bozeman, which was both part museum and gallery.
