Hepworth (Dorothy, 1894-1978). Seated Girl, circa late 1930s AR * Hepworth (Dorothy, 1894-1978). Seated Girl, circa late 1930s, oil on canvas laid down on board, unsigned, a partially nude woman sits in a low-backed armchair with her left hand resting against the side of her face, artist's name in pencil to verso of board, a few surface scratches, board size 51 x 40.5 (20 x 16 ins), framed (57 x 47 cm) QTY: (1) NOTE: For a similar work see Girl Reading Letter (c.1937) by Patricia Preece (1894–1966) or Dorothy Hepworth, in the collection of Bangor University (Accession number OP0014). Dorothy Hepworth was a Slade graduate who made prolific work as an artist for most of her life. She showed her work at a couple of small-scale exhibitions during her early years studying at the Slade, where she garnered a Distinction and considerable admiration for her skills but didn’t exhibit under her own name after 1921. Hepworth signed her life-partner Patricia Preece’s name in her paintings from then on, even after Preece’s death. The women lived and worked together for nearly 50 years and are buried together in Cookham Churchyard (from charleston.org.uk). Dorothy Hepworth and Patricia Preece: An Untold Story, a new exhibition of Hepworth's work is due to take place at Charleston in Lewes from March to September, 2024. "Hepworth's skill was in picturing quiet figures at rest, with warm muted tones in elegant simplicity. The power of the paintings comes from their stillness", Jade King, Lead Editor, Art UK.

pencil on paper 18 x 12 1/4 in., 45.8 x 31.2 cm Though hugely respected and admired during her lifetime, Dorothy Hepworth continues to hold a somewhat peripheral position with regards to the artists of the Edwardian period. Graduating with first class honours from the Slade, in 1918 she encountered the forceful and charismatic Patricia Preece who was to become her lifelong companion. After a stint in Paris, they moved back to England in 1925, moving to Cookham two years later where they met Stanley Spencer. The 'menage a trois' that developed between these three artists is one of the most scandalous but well-chronicled relationships of the Bloomsbury Group of Edwardian painters. In fact, to reinforce the entanglement of these artists, Hepworth allowed some of her work to be exhibited and sold as original work by Preece, an example of which is offered here in a subsequent lot. Perhaps this explains why Hepworth's career failed to live up to its early promise. Spencer became obsessed with the flirtatious Preece, and he showered her with gifts. She persuaded him to divorce his first wife and to sign his house over to her, finally marrying him in 1937 though she did not leave Hepworth and refused to have sexual relations with him. She eventually evicted Spencer from the house, and would not grant him a divorce, but continued to receive payments from him. After he was knighted in 1959, she insisted on being styled Lady Spencer and claimed a pension as his widow.
