Dans les numéros 11-12 de la revue L'esprit nouveau, Maurice Raynal commentait en ces termes le Fauteuil réalisé en 1920 : "Nous ne regardons pas la peinture avec notre derrière, à moins que les expériences de M. Jules Romains sur la vision par la peau fonctionnent aussi par-là." Herbin a quarante ans et s'interroge : n'est-il pas dans l'impasse ? C'est alors qu'il décide de se ressourcer. Il s'y applique comme un invalide en rééducation. Tout au long de l'année 1922 il peindra trois tableaux par mois, passant d'un style à un autre, à la recherche d'une nouvelle figuration. Quatre paysages peints à Paris sont des architectures minutieuses et froides. Un séjour dans la vallée de la Loue lui permet de retrouver d'anciens réflexes, les rythmes, la touche libre et sensible, la joie des couleurs. La série de six portraits peints au cours de cette année traduisent la même incertitude. Trois sont d'esprit cubiste (notamment Mme H. à la robe bleue), tandis que les deux portraits de la jeune fille aux cheveux longs retrouvent un mode d'expression classique. Le désarroi se révèle aussi dans quelque quatorze natures mortes. Certaines sont des compositions puristes de la même veine que Nature morte au compotier. Citons : Corbeille de fruits, Nature morte au pot blanc, Nature morte aux choux-fleurs. D'autres, plus nombreuses, sont des œuvres réalistes (plusieurs compositions florales et deux natures mortes Poissons, Scorsonères). Si Herbin ne conserve pas alors la même voie que celle suivie par Piet Mondrian ou Walter Dexel, avec lequel son évolution présentait jusqu'alors de nombreux points communs, et s'il participe à sa manière au "Retour à l'ordre", qui prévaut dans une certaine fraction de l'art occidental, Herbin n'en apparaît pas moins décalé par rapport à Picasso, Derain, Gris, La Fresnaye, Carrà ou Severini, qui sont à l'origine de ce mouvement. Herbin va toutefois se diriger très loin aussi dans cette direction, quand ses tableaux retrouvent la même gamme, expriment la même sensibilité que ceux d'Othon Friesz ou d'André Dunoyer de Segonzac (Sentier sur la colline Sainte-Croix à Cassis) ou quand il pousse le retour à la figuration jusqu'à la raideur (Joueurs de boule, 1923) et parfois même à la naïveté (Jeune fille aux fleurs, 1924). » Serge Lemoine, « Préface » in. With the painting “Les coteaux à Haute-Isle”, one of the few late-impressionist works by the versatile painter Auguste Herbin, is coming up for auction. Herbin has captured the Oise valley near Pontoise in a luminous yellow, light blue and green, and delicate violet. Standing on the bank, he looked out at the calmly flowing river, whose opposite side is lined with trees and shrubs. The reflections in the water produce captivating chromatic effects. Immersed in a warm summery light, this riverscape conveys the cheerfulness so characteristic of impressionism. After creating purely pointillist paintings whose colours are rigidly partitioned according to divisionist theories, Herbin developed a freer form of brushwork for this landscape – above all, in order to depict the water sparkling in the light. With a subtle sensibility and skilful use of the elements of art, he has arrived at his own personal variation on late impressionism by developing a style based on longer and shorter strokes, little patches of colour and lines that often melt and merge together, conveying a greater sense of dynamism. He may have been influenced by the Belgian neo-impressionist Georges Lemmen (1865–1916), whose works he could have seen during his regular visits to Belgium from 1901. Late impressionism nonetheless remained a passing artistic phase for Herbin, who would already join the Fauves in 1907 and whose work was strongly influenced by cubism from 1908.

Signed 'herbin' in black lower left. During the first decades of his career, Auguste Herbin spent time in various places around northern and southern France, creating village scenes, landscapes and still lifes. These frequent relocations repeatedly provided him with new thematic stimuli that challenged his visual habits and presented him with different compositional possibilities. The relocations, which additionally led him to Alfred Lichtwark in Hamburg in 1909, were usually also accompanied by stylistic changes” (Auguste Herbin, exh. cat. Lenbachhaus München 2025, p. 9). In 1909 Herbin was spending the summer in Le Cateau-Cambrésis in the Département Haute-de-France: he selected the most notable sight of the area, the striking Saint-Benin railway viaduct, as the motif for the painting here. The viaduct, waterfall and vegetation are built up out of parallel brushstrokes, a technique still rooted in the tradition of late impressionism. But this stylistic phase was already undergoing a transition in 1909: while the motifs on the right – the viaduct, weir and waterfall – still remain recognisable, the colours on the left develop a semi-abstract life of their own tending in the direction of cubism. This partly representational and partly abstract pictorial structure is characteristic of Herbin’s works from the years 1908 and 1909. The dynamically charged composition and the selected palette consisting of warm tones of brown with green and yellow are precisely what define the work’s charm.

STILLLEBEN MIT BIRNEN UND MISTELZWEIG, UM 1921 Öl auf Leinwand. 38,7 x 61,2 cm. Rechts unten signiert. Das Gemälde weist Merkmale des Kubismus auf, dem sich Herbin ab 1909 zugewandt hatte. Damit zählt er zu den bedeutenden ersten Vertretern dieser Bildsprache. Zusammen mit den Malern der Gruppe Fauves beteiligte er sich am Salon d’Automne, wandte sich jedoch nach der Begegnung mit Juan Gris (1887 – 1927) dem Kubismus zu. Anders als bei Gris oder Picasso ist hier im Bild eine entschieden harmonische, nahezu auf Symmetrie abgestellte Komposition zu erkennen. Herbin unterhielt ein Atelier im berühmten Bateau-Lavoir auf dem Montmartre in Paris, in Nachbarschaft zu Kees van Dongen (1877 – 1968), Amedeo Modigliani (1884 – 1920) und Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973). In der Entstehungszeit des vorliegenden Werkes stand er unter Vertrag mit der Galerie Léonce Rosenberg, wo er 1918, 1921 und 1924 Einzelausstellungen hatte. Erst ab etwa 1930 wandte er sich der abstrakten Kunst zu. 1931 wurde er Präsident der Gruppe Abstraction-Création und entwickelte neue Farbtheorien beeinflusst von Goethes Farbenlehre. Ab 1953 durch eine Lähmung beeinträchtigt arbeitete er nur noch mit der linken Hand. Werke seiner Hand u. a. im Musée National d’Art Moderne; Centre Georges-Pompidou, Paris; und im LWL-Museum für Kunst und Kultur, Münster. Auguste Herbin Minimalist Abstract Print, 1950. An ink print on paper with optically intriguing concentric circles in shades of yellow by the artist Auguste Herbin (French, 1882-1960). Signed and dated in pencil by the artist bottom right and editioned 9 of 24 bottom left. In a brushed metal frame with gray mat. Dimensions are 41 in h x 37.5 in w. Condition of print is very good. We are delighted to feature this selection of the property from the collection of Paul Gunther, including pieces by Mitch Epstein, John Patrick Dugdale, Ugo Cipriani and Mies van der Rohe. Paul Gunther (1956â2022) was a tireless champion of New York City's public realm, recognizing that its vitality was rooted in the diverse perspectives of artists, architects, and everyday citizens alike. Throughout his career, he held leadership roles at New Yorkâbased nonprofit arts organizations including the Gracie Mansion Conservancy, the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art, the New-York Historical Society, and the Municipal Art Society. These platforms allowed him to pursue wide-ranging interestsâfrom safeguarding neglected neoclassical monuments to ensuring that the redevelopment of Times Square preserved its incandescent signage. His lifelong commitment to innovation and preservation is his enduring legacy, visible in the vitality of New York's shared urban spaces. That same ecumenical and open-minded approach to the arts shaped his personal collecting. Paul brought to his home the same discerning yet inclusive eye he brought to his professional work. His 10th Street apartment was filled with an eclectic array of art and designâobjects spanning countries, styles, and eras. Many were acquired during travels across Europe, Asia, and South America; others were treasured gifts from friends and colleagues such as Henry Geldzahler, former Commissioner of Cultural Affairs for New York City and curator. Together, these works reflect the aesthetic breadth and curiosity that defined him. The sale of works from the Collection of Paul Gunther offers the opportunity not only to acquire part of his legacy but also to sustain the vision that animated his life. Proceeds will benefit the Paul Gunther Fund for Inclusive Public Space, administered by The Architectural League of New York. Established in his honor, the Fund will support the annual Paul Gunther Prize for Inclusive Public Space, a $20,000 award given over ten years to support individuals or teams undertaking innovative projects that create, enhance, and preserve inclusive public space in New York City. Mai 2025 Am Rand einer hellen Tischplatte die auf einem weißen, leicht zusammengeknüllten Tuch liegenden Birnen in subtiler Farbigkeit, dahinter wohl eine weitere dicke dunkelrote Birne, rechts daneben stehend eine weiße Schale. Das Licht fällt aus nicht sichtbarer Quelle von links oben auf die stilllebenhaft präsentierten Objekte und läßt besonders die untere rechte Ecke verschattet. Malerei in der typischen Manier des bekannten Künstlers. Der Künstler schuf ein umfangreiches Werk. Er wurde von einer Vielzahl von Stilrichtungen beeinflusst, darunter Impressionismus, Fauvismus und Kubismus. 1925 begann er, abstrakt zu arbeiten.
