Oil on canvas Netherlands, 1920 Georg Hering (1884-1936) - German-Dutch painter and etcher Signed and dated upper right 'G. HERING 1920' Dimensions: 65 x 70.5 cm In profile frame Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Typical portrait of Frisian fishermen by the artist, who was working in North Holland; the auction record for one of his portraits of fishermen is currently at € 10,000 The German-Dutch artist portrayed in this painting three Volendam fishermen in national costume. Their expression is serious and thoughtful, direct eye contact with the viewer is avoided. Sails of the fishing boats lead the sight into the depth, only on the left the sea with two sailboats under a clouded sky can be seen. The color of the composition ranges from tones of blue and red, which are complemented with white and brown. The painting is signed and dated upper right 'G. HERING 1930'. The varnish is overall minor darkend. In the left center there is a tiny paint loss in the area of the fisherman's cap. Overall the condition is good. The condition of the frame is good, too, with slight signs of wear. The stretcher measures 65 x 70.5 cm, the framed dimensions are 75 x 80.5 cm. Georg Hering (1984-1936) Georg Hering was born in the East Frisian Aurich. He received his education at the School of Applied Arts in Hamburg. He worked in the Netherlands, where he painted the preferred fishermen around the Zuiderzee. In 1910 he first visited Volendam and met his future wife, Pauline Spaander. Other places of his artistic activities were Blaricum, Laren and Edam, where he spent his remaining years. Hering's work is characterized by a special feeling for color and a lively brushstroke.
