As an officer cadet at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, he was instructed by the foremost topographical artist of the time Paul Sandby. He is the author of Travels through the Canadas (1807), and A Picturesque Tour made in the years 1817 and 1820 through the Pyrenean Mountains.

As postmaster-general of British North America from 1799 to 1816, Heriot devoted himself to travel across Canada and the United States. He describes the fur trade, his voyages to the North, and cod fishery, devoting the second part of the text to a scholarly study of the Native peoples of the Americas, including Father Rasles's vocabulary of the Algonquin languages and other information drawn from Jesuit reports. This work also contains one of the best contemporary accounts of the Loyalist settlements in Canada. The fine illustrations are all after Heriot himself, and it was issued both colored and uncolored. Originally intended as a multi-volume series based on Charlevoix's work and sometimes appearing with a half-title declaring it to be "vol. I", only this single volume was ever published. FIRST EDITION of the work by Scottish-Canadian civil servant Heriot, one of the most notable figures in early Canadian art. Folding frontispiece view of Quebec (reinforced along gutter) and 25 sepia aquatint plates including many folding panoramic views, 1 engraved plate of a moose deer and folding hand-colored map of the St. Lawrence River (a few plates faintly impressed, some occasional offsetting between plates and text, including on title, some occasional spotting). Contemporary calf (rebacked preserving original spine). FIRST EDITION. In his position as deputy postmaster general of British North America, Heriot travelled extensively through the Canadas. His watercolor sketches, made on these journeys, formed the bases for this work. He had studied watercolor under Paul Sandby. "Illustrated books on North America are curiously few in the period with which we deal. By far the most interesting is Heriots Travels through the Canadas... interesting for its aquatints by Stadler and Lewis after Heriot" (Prideaux, pp.254-5). The text gives interesting accounts of the fur trade, loyalist settlements, northern travels, the cod fisheries and detailed descriptions of Indian cultures, including Father Rasles's vocabulary of the Algonquin languages.
