RANDOLPH STANLEY HEWTON, R.C.A.SAINT-JOSEPH DE LÉVISoil on canvas 24 ins x 29 ins; 61 cms x 73.7 cms Provenance:Private Collection, HalifaxLiterature:Evelyn Walters, The Beaver Hall Group and its Legacy, Dundurn Press, Toronto, 2017, page 37.Sociable and charming, Randolph Hewton (1888-1960), who was born in Quebec, was destined for a career in art. Studying under the distinguished Canadian landscape painter, William Brymner, Hewton attended the academies of Paris where he met and travelled with Group of Seven mainstay, A.Y. Jackson and several other Canadian painters. While he exhibited regularly at the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and was an often celebrated artist, Hewton only sold one painting in his lifetime - to his aunt. Enlisting in the First World War in 1915, one of his duties was to record battle scenes in the area of Mons, France. These watercolour works later formed the basis of his solo exhibition, which ultimately led to his invitation to exhibit in the first Group of Seven show in 1920, and the founding of the Beaver Hall Group with several other Montreal based artists in that same year. Succeeding William Brymner as principal of the Art Association of Montreal, Hewton was a highly respected instructor. Yet his then unprecedented use of bright, contrasting colours in both his landscape and portrait paintings was beginning to attract negative criticism, and perhaps due to his support of the modernist aesthetic styles, by 1924 the AAM had terminated his contract. He continued painting and exhibiting throughout the next few decades, but when his beloved wife died in 1950 he gave up painting altogether and died ten years later. Remembering fondly his lifelong friend, A.Y. Jackson wrote: “He was a good companion, friendly, sympathetic and generous in his estimation of others”. Picturing a classic winter scene in a small Quebec town with a bold and lively colour palette, Saint-Joseph de Lévis is not only an excellent example of an artist exploring his home and his talents, but also demonstrates the early rise of modernism and expressionism in Canada at the time.Estimate: $15,000–18,000

RANDOLPH STANLEY HEWTON, R.C.A.BAIE ST. PAULoil on canvassigned 20 ins x 24 ins; 50.8 cms x 61 cms Provenance:Galerie Walter Klinkhoff Inc., MontrealPrivate Collection, MontrealLiterature:Victoria Baker, Modern Colours: The Art of Randolph Stanley Hewton, 1888-1960, Art Gallery of Hamilton, Hamilton, 2001, page 5.Note:Hewton (like Robinson, see lot 72) had been invited to exhibit with the Group of Seven at their inaugural exhibition in 1920 as a result of his friendship with A.Y. Jackson, whom he had met in Paris in 1912 and with whom he often sketched. It is upon this early exposure to audiences as a landscape painter that his reputation was first popularly established. Whereas the figurative work of Hewton has increased in popularity having been underscored by exhibitions such as Modern Colours: The Art of Stanley Hewton in 2001 at the Art Gallery of Hamilton and the current Beaver Hall exhibition making major stops across Canada, it remains that landscape was a great passion of Hewton's. He particularly seems to have enjoyed the camaraderie sketching trips afforded and partook in trips to the Lower St. Lawrence on numerous occasions with Jackson and others, including Banting, Holgate and Gagnon. His great talent was as a colourist, who some said was "unequaled in Canadian Art."Hewton demonstrated himself to be among the most talented of his generation and was influential as the successor to William Brymner when he became director of the Art Association of Montreal. His influence also extended to membership in the selection committee for the famed Wembley Exhibition which introduced Canadian painting to a broad British audience. Estimate: $10,000–15,000

Born in Quebec, Hewton studied first at the Art Association of Montreal, then in Paris, where he met A.Y. Jackson in 1912. They would remain lifelong friends. Hewton was invited to contribute to the first Group of Seven show held in Toronto in 1920, and later that year, was a founding member of the short-lived but significant Beaver Hall Group. (The Beaver Hall Group is the subject of a large exhibition currently on national tour.) Hewton typically took time off work in the early spring (he ran a business manufacturing paper boxes) to sketch in the Charlevoix district of Quebec—at Baie St. Paul, St. Tite des Caps, St. Irénée—often in the company of Jackson and Percy Robinson. Quebec Village, Winter is a typical rural village scene with the church, whose central position is emphasized by the sweeping curve of the traditional bell-cast roof to the right, and signals its importance in the community. Spring is clearly in the air—the snow is melting, the sky is painted using strokes of warm beige, and Hewton has chosen a close-up view of the town, giving more area to the warm tones of the dwellings.

Jackson, and went on sketching trips with him in the Quebec countryside, along with other artists. In his autobiography, Jackson recounts, "For several seasons, Robinson, Holgate, Hewton and I worked in the late winter at La Malbaie. It was a charming little town." Vigorous of brush-stroke and richly hued, this is a captivating La Malbaie canvas.

Randolph Stanley Hewton 1888 - 1960 Canadian oil on canvas Looking Towards Murray Bay, PQ 12 x 14 inches 30.5 x 35.6 centimeters signed and on verso signed, titled and dated indistinctly Literature:Victoria Baker, Modern Colours: The Art of Randolph Stanley Hewton, 1888 - 1960, Art Gallery of Hamilton, 2002, page 17 Provenance:Canadian Fine Arts, Toronto Private Collection, Toronto Randolph Hewton trained in France along with Group of Seven artist A.Y. Jackson. When they returned to Montreal in 1913 and had their first exhibition, Jackson wrote, "While we were not very radical we were exponents of French Art which was not popular at that time in Montreal." Although they may not have been wild radicals, they were decidedly on the side of the modernists. Hewton became one of the members of the Beaver Hall Group in Montreal and was considered to be a formative influence in the lives of Beaver Hall women artists Prudence Heward, Sarah Robertson and Nora Collyer. He traveled on sketching trips with Jackson in the Quebec countryside, and was invited to show in the first Group of Seven exhibition in 1920. As well as painting landscapes, Hewton was one of the few Canadian painters of the time to paint nudes. His landscapes had a strength of composition, freshness of colour and simplicity of form, all manifest in Looking Towards Murray Bay, PQ, with its sun-drenched fields and euphoric view of the sea under a glorious sky.
