Note: Colonel Fitzgerald of Ballinaparka, County Waterford and Newcastle, County Tipperary, was born in 1737. He sailed as ensign in the 'Royal George' in 1759, aged 21, before being promoted to Lieutenant of the Madras Infantry in 1759, then Captain in 1763, and Major in 1766. He was present at the siege of Madura in 1764 and was wounded. He retired in 1770.

Sophia Dashwood was the daughter of Charles Vere Bertie Dashwood (1745-1821) and Diana Dashwood (1745-1812). Born in Dublin, Hickey was the brother of John Hickey, the sculptor. He was trained at the Royal Dublin Society schools under Robert West (1710-1770). He travelled widely, working in India, Portugal, Italy and England, residing in Bath between 1776 and 1780. On his first voyage to India, his ship was captured by French and Spanish fleets which led him to Lisbon, where, after receiving a number of commissions, he remained for several years. He eventually reached Bengal and stayed there until 1791 when he returned to England, and it was probably around this date that the present work was painted. In 1792, he accompanied George Macartney, 1st Earl Macartney to Peking, China as the trade expedition's official portrait painter.He returned to Ireland shortly after the death of his brother John in January 1796. By 1798 he had returned to India just in time for the start of the Fourth Mysore War. In Mysore he was commissioned to make a number of sketches depicting family members of Mysore's ruler Tipu Sultan. He resided in Madras until his death in 1824.

Circle of Thomas Hickey, Irish 1741-1824- Portrait of Thomas Farrer (1744-1797), bust length, in a blue coat with a red collar, feigned oval; oil on canvas, 76 x 63.5 cm. Provenance: The sitter; Thereafter stayed in the Farrer Family (Hung at Ingleborough Hall, Clapham, Yorkshire, until the 20th century when transferred to the offices of Farrer & Co., 66 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London). Note: Thomas Farrer was brother to Oliver and James (see lots 103 and 106), and was the son of James Farrer of Clapham (1719-1766), Yorkshire. He was a rather colourful character who was called to the bar, went to Calcutta to practice at the newly established law court, made a fortune, and then lost most of it gambling on his journey home. He then went out there again and later settled in England as MP for Wareham. He is mentioned in William Hickey's memoirs, but was famous mainly for his defence in the trial of Maharaja Nandakumar. He remained convinced that there had been a miscarriage of justice.

ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS HICKEY (1741-1824) Portrait of Mrs Moore of Barne, Lady Barne, half-length in lace collared dress, with elaborate feathered hat, before a landscape with trees Oil on canvas, 75 x 62cm Framed applied with plaque 'Mrs Moore Barne - Born 1741 - Died 1783 A group portrait of Stephen, first Earl and Helen, Countess of Mountcashel with their four children is attributed to the renowned portrait and landscape painter, Thomas Hickey. The scene is referenced and reproduced in The Painters of Ireland c. 1660-1920, a seminal illustrated history of Irish painting. An individual portrait of Henrietta Moore of Barne, cousin to the Mountcashel family, has also been attributed to Hickey. A later portrait of Henrietta painted by John Astley can be found in the same book as Hickey’s portrait of the Mountcashels, cementing this extended family’s historical role as patrons of important Irish artists. Hickey’s rendition captures Henrietta in her youth, whilst Astley’s depicts her as a grown woman. Astley also separately painted her husband’s portrait, Richard Moore of Barne. The two portraits of Henrietta draw focus to the attire of the sitter, reflecting her knowledge and pursuit of contemporary styles and trends. The reference to Astley’s portrait of Henrietta and to Hickey’s portrait of the Mountcashels in this seminal account of prolific Irish painters, together with Hickey’s earlier rendition of Henrietta’s portrait, underscores the significance of the Irish aristocracy in participating in and sustaining a web of patronage that supported and shaped the trajectory of Irish art throughout this period.

Sometime in 1820, in Madras, India, the nearly eighty-year-old Irish artist, Thomas Hickey (1741â1824), painted the portrait of Sebastian Holford Greig (1780-1820), a young Scottish magistrate. Hickey, who had trained in Dublin and London, traveled East, was attacked and captured by Spanish and French ships, escaped to live in Lisbon for several years and finally arrived in India where he settled in 1798. There he established a reputation as a portraitist of the Scottish military, officers of the East India Company, British surveyors, and civil servants. The portrait exhibits Hickeyâs characteristic delicate handling of fabric in the white cravat and navy frock, and can be seen as a key example of Anglo-Indian history and its complex web of relations across the seas.

THOMAS HICKEY (DUBLIN 1741-1824 MADRAS) Portrait of General Sir Thomas Bowser (1749-1833) oil on canvas, oval 18 x 14 3/4 in. (45.7 x 37.5 cm.) General Sir Thomas Bowser joined the Madras European Regiment of the East India Company as an ensign in 1773. He subsequently rose through the ranks to eventually be appointed Lieutenant Colonel in 1797. Bowser fought in numerous campaigns. In 1780 he was taken prisoner and for four years was subject to brutal conditions, notably being forced to wear heavy iron leg cuffs that inflicted long-standing wounds. Despite continuing his distinguished service in India until 1826, Bowser never fully recovered from his prison injuries and died in 1833 from a resultant incurable disease in his legs.

Portrait of a mother and child Oil on canvas Enclosed in a contemporary giltwood frame Note: Ward family book plate verso with the motto 'sub cruce salus-salvation' under the cross, pertains to the Viscounts Bangor of Castle Ward, Co. Down. Thomas Hickey (Irish, 1741-1824) was a portrait and genre painter, first working in chalk and pastels before turning to oil paints for most of his work. He trained in Dublin under Robert West. He travelled to Italy, returning to Dublin in 1767. To further his career he then moved to London. He commenced exhibiting at the Royal Academy in 1772. He resided in Bath between 1776 and 1780. He worked for several years in Lisbon. He travelled to India and worked there until 1791 when he returned to Ireland. He later accompanied Earl Macartney on his expedition to Peking as official painter. In 1796 he was working in Ireland. He departed for his second visit to India in 1798 where he remained for the rest of his life. Here he painted the family of the Mysore Ruler, Tipu Sultan.

ATTRIBUTED TO THOMAS HICKEY (DUBLIN 1741- MADRAS 1834), Portrait of Sir William Gleadowe Newcomen (1740, 1st Bt 1 STBT), depicted seated by a table with the Honorable Thomas Newcomen as a child seated on the floor, O.O.C., 29'' (73cm)h x 27'' (68cm). (1) Sir William Gleadowe Newcomen, (1740-1807) of Killester Co. Dublin, son of Thomas Gleadowe, Banker of Castle Street Dublin, who married Charlotte, daughter and heir of Charles Newcomen MP of Carryglass Co. Longfort in 1722. He also assumed her name. In 1781 he was knighted and elected to the Irish parliament. He voted in favour of the Act of Union. Sir William Gleadowe- Nuwcomen's wife was awarded with peerage as thanks. She was made Baroness Newcomen July 1800 and Viscountess Newcomen in 1803. in 1778 he commissioned architect Thomas Ivory to build a new bank at 16 Castle Street, next to City Hall Dublin, which traded as Newcomen & Co. Bank. It was completed in 1781. At the time of his death in 1807 he was £74,000 in debt to his own bank. His son Thomas Viscount Newcomen inherited his mother's title and management of the bank; he followed his father's example by borrowing large sums of money from his own bank and elsewhere, to the tune of £160,000. He soon turned into an isolated dissident and could not face the public again and eventually turned a gun on himself.

Thomas Hickey (1741-1824) PORTRAIT OF MARY WATHEN BY A COLUMN IN A WOODED LANDSCAPE oil on canvas with hand-written labels relating to the sitter on reverse h:29.25 w:25 in. Provenance: By family descent to Sir Wathen Arthur Waller; Christie's, 12 December 1947, lot 150 (100gns to Blakeley); Christie's, 15 November 1991, lot 28; Private collection Thomas Hickey studied at the drawing schools of the Dublin Society and between 1753 and 1756 won several prizes for his work. He was the son of a confectioner in Capel Street. Following some years in Italy furthering his studies he returned to Dublin where he lived in Little Britain Street in 1767. He exhibited for three consecutive years from 1768 with the Society of Artists in William Street but a lack of patronage forced him to relocate to London. There he showed with the Royal Academy in 1772, 1775 and 1792 and later worked for a time in Bath. He travelled to India in the 1780s. One of Hickey's best known works, in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland, was painted during this period, An Indian Lady, perhaps 'Jemdanee', Bibi of William Hickey, 1787. Hickey was living in Cavendish Square, London in 1792 and, that same year, became attached to Lord Macartney's mission to China as "portrait painter". The present work was painted on return from his excursion to the Far East. The subject is Mary Wathen; daughter of Samuel Wathen. In 1766 she married Henry Christopher Wise of the Priory, Warwick; they had two sons - Matthew, who was High Sheriff of Warwickshire, and Henry who took Holy Orders. Her husband's grandfather Henry Wise (1653-1738) was a celebrated horticulturalist. He was Deputy Ranger of Hyde Park and Superintendent of the Royal Gardens at Hampton Court. Under Queen Anne, Wise was given overall control of the Royal Gardens, a post which was upheld under King George I.
