Biography

Artist Hieronymus Bosch, born in 1450, was a Dutch painter who exerted a seminal influence on the art world to this day, inspiring the school of Surrealist painters, in particular. Hieronymus Bosch paintings include oils on oak board, many as allegorical figural paintings on tripartite panels known as triptychs, using humans and fantastical creatures to represent moral decay in society and God's hellish consequences for human sin.

The best-known work of artist Hieronymus Bosch is The Garden of Earthly Delights, a triptych representing the fall of man, from innocence to earthly delight to final judgment. Bosch depicts each panel's message with tonality, from muted to vibrant to dark, and with the unreal creatures inhabiting each stage, from gentle unicorns to human-devouring frog-birds. Collectible Hieronymus Bosch prints of his figural paintings are available from artists working in this and past centuries.
