Thomas (1829) Hill Sold at Auction Prices

Landscape painter, Naval painter, Genre Painter, Portrait painter, Still life painter, b. 1829 - d. 1908

(b England, 1829; d California, 1908) American Painter. At the age of fifteen, Thomas Hill emigrated from England to the United States where he gained his early academic training at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, studying under Peter Rothermel. Traveling primarily through the East, Hill spent time painting the White Mountains in New Hampshire with leading Hudson River School artists such as Asher B. Durand and George Inness.* Making a name for himself as an accomplished landscape and portrait painter on the East coast, Hill was stricken with tuberculosis and was forced to relocate to California, where he settled in San Francisco in 1861. Hill was among the first painters to arrive in California with the purpose of depicting the majesty and beauty of the California landscape. Beginning in the 1860s, the artist executed canvases that evoked the pristine qualities of the great western expanse, specifically the dramatic topography of Yosemite. Inspired by the dramatic landscape of California, he opened a studio in Yosemite some years later in 1883 where he found financial success selling his work to tourists.** Throughout his long career, Hill sought out mountain subjects, not merely in California, but in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Yellowstone. In 1886 Thomas Hill moved just miles from Yosemite, and remained there for the remainder of his life. Est: $8,000 - $12,000

HILL, Thomas (1829-1908). Floral Still Life, 1853. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right: "T. Hill and dated 1853". 26 1/4" x 20 1/8" visible; 36" x 25 3/4" framed. Provenance: Marbella Gallery, New York; Property from the Collection of Dr. Abraham & Carolyn Schlossman. Thomas Hill was born in Birmingham, England on September 11, 1829. After immigrating to the United States in 1844, Hill settled with his family in Taunton, Massachusetts. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under the tutelage of Peter F. Rothermel. Hill painted in Massachusetts throughout the 1850s, often in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, with a group of artists that included Asher B. Durand, George Inness, Benjamin Champney, Albert Bierstadt, Virgil Williams and his brother Edward Hill. For health reasons he was forced to seek a milder climate and, with wife and children, made the overland trek to California in 1861. After settling in San Francisco, Hill advertised himself as a portrait painter. In 1862 Hill made his first trip to Yosemite accompanied by the artists William Keith and Virgil Williams. In 1866 Hill exhibited his Yosemite scenes at the National Academy, and later that year, traveled to Paris where he was a pupil of Paul Meyerheim and exhibited at the Universal Expo. Returning to the United States, Hill stayed in Boston from 1868 to 1970, but returned to San Francisco in 1871. He hit his artistic stride in California during the 1870s, beginning with his first grandiose painting, The Yosemite Valley, which was published as a chromolithograph by Prang. With Frederic Whymper, Hill was a founding member of the San Francisco Art Association, and in 1873 he became a member of the Bohemian Club, a men’s organization dedicated to cultural enhancement. Hill built a studio in Yosemite in 1883 which would become his main residence for the rest of his life (his wife maintained the family home in Oakland). During the winter months Hill resided in San Francisco, where he maintained a studio in the Flood Building. When Virgil Williams died in 1886, Hill became interim director of the School of Design until a new director could be found. During the 1870s and 1880s, Hill’s work was in demand and brought very high prices; however, during the later part of his life his work did not command the interest that it once had due to changing art styles. Today his work has regained its proper stature and he is considered a giant in American art.

Original Thomas Hill Print "Yo-Semite Valley" ca. 1875

          Est: $4,000 - $6,000

Thomas Hill (American, born in England, 1829-1908). "Yo-Semite Valley " original antique chromolithograph published by Prang & Co. Boston, MA, ca. 1875. An original, antique chromolithograph of Thomas Hill's "View of Yosemite Valley" (1865) mounted in a stunning frame that demonstrates the utmost artistry and is comprised of museum-quality materials. Hill was known for his fine paintings of the California landscape, most notably Yosemite Valley. He established a studio in Wawona, just outside of Yosemite, and became known as "Yosemite's Painter". Born in England, he moved to the US at the age of 15 in 1829 and soon became associated with the Hudson River School prior to moving West in 1861. In this composition, Hill captured the sublimity of the American West, the Romanticism of Manifest Destiny, as well as the peaceful coexistence of human beings and nature. There are so many wonderful vignettes in this piece. For example, notice the tiny staffage figures on horseback at the lower right spotlit by dramatic rays of sunlight beneath a majestic waterfall. Hill does the magnificence of Yosemite justice, simultaneously capturing its pastoral as well as its rugged qualities with both remarkably realistic details as well as an eye for idealism that reflects the zeitgeist for Romanticism during this period. Size (sight view): 15.25" L x 25.5" W (38.7 cm x 64.8 cm) Size (frame): 30.875" L x 41.125" W (78.4 cm x 104.5 cm) About the Artist: "Born in Birmingham, England, in 1829, Thomas Hill moved to the United States at the age of 15 and enrolled in the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts nine years later. He later visited the White Mountains of New Hampshire and became acquainted with the landscape painters of the Hudson River School. In 1858, he had his first exhibition of thirty oil paintings in Boston. In 1861, Hill and his family moved to California, where he set up a studio in San Francisco. He made his first documented trip to Yosemite in 1865, with travel companions painter Virgil Williams and photographer Carleton Watkins. At thirty-six, Hill returned to San Francisco and painted California scenes, including several Yosemite views. He was successful, and sold both landscapes and portraits during the boom times following the completion of the Union Pacific Railroad and the discovery of silver in Nevada. But Hill, restless and ambitious, soon felt he needed more training if he was to grow as an artist and, leaving his family behind, traveled to Europe in 1866. The ten months Hill spent in Europe were undoubtedly important to the developing artist. He studied with Paul Meyerheim in Paris, who encouraged him to focus on landscape painting. Hill was exposed to the Barbizon School, which placed emphasis on naturalistic landscape painting as opposed to artificially romanticized exaggeration. While in France, he continued to work on paintings of California, including Yosemite. Returning to the United States in 1867, Hill opened a studio in Boston, where he spent the next several years painting, exhibiting, and raising a family. In 1872, Thomas Hill moved back to San Francisco with his wife Charlotte Hawkes and their nine children. Here, amid the beauty and grandeur of the California landscape, he thrived and became an important part of the growing California art scene. During the late 1870s, Hill became increasingly popular as a landscape painter, particularly of Yosemite subjects. After a sketching tour in the spring of 1879, he returned with over 30 oil sketches, quickly turning several into larger paintings. Hill’s Studio in Wawona, near the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, was finished by January 1884. In the 1880s, he separated from his wife, and spent less time in San Francisco and Oakland. Increasingly, he found happiness and success in Yosemite. By 1886, Hill settled at Wawona spending summers there and winters in nearby Raymond, CA. Hill’s work at Wawona was prolific and modestly profitable—in three years he sold 163 paintings. He seemed to enjoy the relaxed lifestyle and easy popularity as Wawona’s resident artist. As with many artists, his fortunes fluctuated with the erratic art market. After 1880, Hill’s popularity declined and it became increasingly difficult for him to sell paintings. Despite suffering a stroke in 1896, he continued to paint, but his sales slowed and his travels were limited. As late as 1906, it was reported that he was 'still at work and his easel is set up at a very early hour each morning.' Thomas Hill died on June 30, 1908, in Raymond, California." THOMAS HILL (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1829-1908) YOSEMITE LANDSCAPE

          Est: $10,000 - $15,000

THOMAS HILL (BRITISH-AMERICAN, 1829-1908) YOSEMITE LANDSCAPE, oil on canvas, of impressive size, an atmospheric view of Half Dome at twilight from the Merced River, signed lower right on boulder. Housed in a modern frame. Reserve. Circa 1875. 47 1/4" x 33 1/2" sight, 53 3/4" x 40" OA. Catalogue Note: Born in Birmingham, England, Thomas Hill (1829-1908) immigrated to the United States in 1844 with his parents, settling in Massachusetts. After an early stint as an apprentice to a carriage and sign painter in Boston, Hill moved to Philadelphia in 1853 and began artistic studies in earnest with Peter Rothermel at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1861, Hill journeyed west to San Francisco, the first of many such trips, where he began to document the Sierra Nevada landscape, particularly the area around Yosemite Valley. After a short period of study in Paris with Paul Meyerheim, Hill returned to California, where he established a studio in San Francisco and began to attract wealthy clients, such as Leland Stanford and the Crocker Family. Known for his panoramic Western views, often executed on a grand scale, Hill is regarded as one of the most important 19th-century painters of the American landscape. The present example, one of three from the Evitt Collection, typifies the artist's mature style, in which he is able to capture the majestic nature of one of the world's most iconic landscapes. Jun. 13, 2023

          Thomas Hill (1829 - 1908) American

          Est: $2,500 - $3,500

Thomas Hill (1829 - 1908) Oil on Canvas, Signed, Measures ( 18 x 12 inches ) w/frame ( 21.5 x 15.5 inches ) Immigrating from England in 1844, Thomas Hill came to America with his family as a youngster, and became one of America's most famous 19th-century landscape painter, especially of panoramic views of the Sierra Nevada Mountains and Yosemite. He also painted landscapes of the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone National Park, where he was particularly fascinated by the geysers. Hill studied art in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy, and his first intentions were to become a history painter. However, he changed to landscape when he spent time in Europe, especially France among the Barbizon painters and in the studio of Paul Meyerheim. During the 1870s and 1880s, his work brought high prices, but diminished with the increasing popularity of modernism. In the latter half of the 20th century, his work was rediscovered, and he is now considered one of the major figures in American art.
